So I did my 200 hours with a mentor at swift and passed the final test and went to the terminal to upgrade my status. My driver leader looked over my notes and said everything looked great as he was slipping through the pages. At the very end, there was a page that listed all of my backings I did while running through busy Atlanta delivering refrigerated goods. He smiled and aid "this is rare, there aren't a lot of students running refrigerated through cities, so looking at your notes, it looks like you are ready to run refrigerated, so I am going to assign you to that division instead of dry van.
As he picked up his pen, I told him that I would like to run dry van because it suits me better. He then said reefer pays better than dry van so I thought you would like this better. I then told him sorry, but maybe later down the line. He then asked me why I didn't like it and I told him it just wasn't for me right now and he said could you be more specific!
I didn't want to be brutally honest, because truthfully, I hated it! I hated backing up in those tight docks late at night and always dealing with rude customers that always have something smart to say. But I only told him that due to my current living situation, dry van suits me.
After explaining my reasons, he then gave a deep frustrated sigh and from that point on, his entire attitude changed. He has become hard to work with and is being a complete A-hole.
Is swift really that desperate for reefer drivers?
Driver leader angry with me because I declined running reefer

I would not have let anyone look at my personal notes. And yes Swift is always desperate for drivers. always.
Dna Mach, QuietStorm and Texas_hwy_287 Thank this. -
Stand firm.
Don't get sucked into that reefer crap.
All kinds of your free labor wrapped up in a reefer.Thull, Rusty Trawler, milehunter43 and 5 others Thank this. -
Go Swift dry van or quit. It's not up to the "driver leader" to decide if you go dry van or refrigerated. He didn't pay for your cdl school so it's none of his business.
Suffer through it and go dry van if that's what you want. Some "driver leaders" act like they know what's best for you and they're sure they know whats best because they have a room full of trophys at home for being losers. When they left home to work for Swift , their parents moved and left no forwarding address.Last edited by a moderator: Dec 16, 2016

Just tell the guy that you Hate Grocery Warehouses and that you would dread every load. Eventually you'd probably snap and he'd be in line to catch the grief. Can't be more honest than that.

Ok, there's such a high turnover of drivers he probably getting headaches getting the loads covered. That's his problem though, not the drivers.201 Thanks this.

Probably. I'm not sure to what extent Swift lets their drivers pick what division they want to run in.
I know you liked it, I don't think I could ever run refer unless it was local, private fleet kind of deal.Chinatown Thanks this. -
With 200 mentor hrs behind you I don't think you are in the good position to negotiate...I would do reefer and dry van, even try tanker and flatbed if had a chance, city or long haul, snow and mountains, do year with no tickets/accidents.
Then get a better job than swift lined up.
Then you can get angry with your driver manager and tell him exactly what you think about him and his reefers

Refrigerated can be challenging to say the least. I liked it because I'm so hard headed I made it work just to spite myself. The odd hours are appealing, but not to everyone.
There's so many choices out there for new drivers, they shouldn't stick around long somewhere if they don't like it.
