Driver license state change for non citizens?

Tennessee will not issue a CDL to someone who is not a US Citizen. Kentucky will.
I had a similar problem with my wife getting a drivers license. She's a Chinese citizen. She went through driving school and we took that certificate to the DMV in Nashville. They would not give her the drivers license unless she could prove she's married to me, a US citizen. Made a quick trip back home to get our marriage license. Then she was given a drivers license.
I don't know if that's still the law today, but it was back then.
The passport & Green Card was not enough, had to show the marriage license.

 

When we moved to Nevada it was a simple process. She handed her Tennessee license to the clerk and with a new photo, she was given a Nevada drivers license.
With me, a new photo, eye test, and fingerprint for the hazmat. Simple.
Each state has their own rules.

 

With a REAL ID you can fly domestically on airlines without bringing along your Passport, Birth Certificate, other documents. Without those documents and a non-REAL ID you are not flying domestically.

 

These folks have an EAD (employment authorization document), not a green card (permanent resident status).

An EAD is a temporary work permit.

 

They also have a Social Security card and have paid income taxes.

 

The US could place CDL vending machines at the airports, border crossings, and truck stops, if that would help.

 

I’m on your side, but Tennessee doesn’t seem to see fit to issue CDL’s to legal immigrants, other than green card holders.

 

Must be a US Citizen for a CDL. Others can get a Class-C automobile license.

 

Not according to their website. Permanent residents are eligible.
