The thing is Schneider tells us to log as we do it and my driver manager who never drove before keeps telling me that 15 minutes is how long it should take to do a post trip

I always log it 15 minutes, even though I never do one.
I think, technically, a post trip is when you finish the trip completely. I still log one every day just to keep the pencil pushers quiet.

I set a timer on my phone so that I don’t forget that need to log off.

Couple of companies I worked for paid us $10.00 to log a pre-trip & post-trip.
Fine with me, that's $20.00 a day of easy money.

Years ago with paper logs, if I’m not mistaken the D.O.T. required a minimum of 15 minutes for post trip inspection. I always do one, now with everything electronic, it takes as long as it takes. Then log off duty after you turn in your paperwork.

Your DM is probably telling you to log it that way because his/her boss is on his ###. Most megas want you to log it 15 min. Some require 15 min pre trip and 15 min post trip.

The requirements are an inspection prior to operating, and a completed inspection report at end of day. There are no time requirements, but different safety departments put their own spin on things. The 15 minute rule comes from paper logs when the shortest time that could be documented was 15 minutes.

Personally I did a 5 minute post, unless I found something wrong. I also range my pre-trip between 17-22 minutes to make the always 15 minute pretrip from looking suspect should I ever have to deal with a pencil pushing group of lawyers.
