    Hi everyone,

I'm a student at a university in Michigan. A few months ago, I started a project to develop a mobile phone platform to assist truck drivers log their duty statuses. I assembled a group to help produce a prototype that we hope to complete and distribute free to truck drivers this summer. We are really hoping that truck drivers can give us direct input into the development of the program so that we can make it useful to you as possible.

Currently, we want to write applications for the iPhone, Blackberry and other smartphones (starting with the iPhone first, since that's what we have experience with) that will log driver's duty status automatically much like the Qualcomm systems (emulating Werner's paperless logs or similar products). Additionally, each driver will be given a unique identifier and have their own free account that will allow drivers to upload their logging data, network with other drivers, and track their own routes. There are a number of other things we think drivers might like, such as location-based job searches and near-real-time tracking. Of course, all of these options will have the option of being turned off.

There are a number of general things we'd like to know before we begin development:
    1. What kind of cell phones do drivers have? Do many have iPhones, Blackberries or similar? How many plan to purchase one of these phones in the near future?

    2. What kind of functions/features MUST drivers have in a platform like this? What are the most important things we must include in our software?

    3. Is there anything we should NOT include in our software?

    4. Are there any problems drivers often encounter that a platform like this might be able to solve?

    5. Are drivers interested in this sort of thing?
Driver input is essential to determining the direction we take to a final product, so any input is extremely helpful. We're going to monitor these posts periodically to add updates and answer questions as best we can. .

I doubt you'll find many drivers interested . This would just be more documentatio attornies could ask for in a discovery for a lawsuit . Just aboutany type of software a driver or company would want to use is already available .
The cell phone I use is a Blackberry provided by the carrier that replaced the Qualcomm . It has more than enough info on it .

I also have a Blackberry. I utilize a program called XORA. This program allows me to keep in touch with my employer.
Capabilities include but are not limited to:
    ~Time clock
    ~Appointments
    ~GPS locator
~Speed and stops can be monitored.
~Navigation system with map memory storage.

There are many features available that I don't use, yet.

    Love me some Blackberry (Crackberry)!

Mine shows dispatched miles per month for last 6 months and percent loaded . (Usually around 43% loaded but all dedicated so empty pays the same as loaded ) ,fuel purchases including average price paid for last 6 weeks . Yahoo maps is on there as well as our fuel network. They also have renewal dates shown for my DOT physical ,annual traffic violation review , Pulmonary Fitness Test , driver's license , and hazmat training .
Then there is a ton of info on SOP's and corrective action for driver violations .

Hmmm! Left me in your dust with that one. Ha!
    What program do you use?
Sounds like you have the full package.
    Thanks.

Wow, this is some really great feedback!

It seems like most drivers use Blackberries as opposed to iPhones. Are they generally carrier-provided like in your case, RickG? We've heard of the Nextel/Sprint software before but never XORA. It seems like the more research we do, the more competing solutions we find (unfortunately for us).

Because of that, are there any features/functionality that we could add to our platform that would make drivers more likely to use our system over the others? I know that forums like these get tons of activity... what if, for example, we developed a way for drivers to network with one another so that you can share road information, driver stats, freelance jobs, etc.?

My company is experimenting with the Blackberry services.
The XORA program offers accurate real time info available to my employer on his desktop.
We have yet to integrate other features such as RickG. That will be the next phase.

We have the need, so I can't say that you cannot provide. There is always room for improvement.
I personally miss Excel. I could prepare reports and keep organized easily as opposed to a bunch of misc emails or notes.
As for trucking jobs and other information I am drawn to The Truckers Report.

I tell you what i'd like as an I phone app. One that would allow me to enter my hours for the day and keep an 8 day rolling recap of my hours of service. After entering my hours and asking me if i've taken a 34hour reset, giving my my available hours for the next 3 days.

Also an option to enter the pay for each trip and keeping a weekly tally of my load count, and miles per trip.

It would have a second screen showing my miles for the week, my pay for the week and my expenses and income earned for other things which I can enter on the first screen of the revenue portion of the app. I would be able to create names for my expenses such as lumper, shower, unloading pay, drop pay, extra stop pay. as I create catagories it would become a clickable choice for the next time I get into the app.

On the individual trip screen I could enter my empty miles. I could enter my loaded miles and have it figure out my pay based on predetermined rates. For example I get a different rate per mile bases on how far I go. (0-100miles at x; 101-200 at x; 201-300 at x) I could see an expense or additional pay item by name. On the weekly screen I would see a total figure of expense then additional income deducted or added from my milage pay to arrive to my weekly estimated pay figure.

Then being able to download this info into a computer for analizing at the end of the year treads that develope. Things like when miles dropped off, Weeks were the average miles per trip were lower. I think that may be useful.

Anything remotely emulating a paperless log system and using the Cellphone triangulation ability of the smartphones would never be accepted by drivers. It it something we are already against with black boxes.

I have an idea of how the screens should look for these two simple ideas.

If you are looking to sell to drivers. a basic platform may be easier to sell. If you are looking to develop a corporate platform then steer towards the GPS ability of the smartphones. I think it would be a tougher thing to bring to market if you develope software that drivers don't want to use, and even tougher to sell to trucking companies without some sort of affiliation.

Just an 8day recap app would go like hot cakes I believe. You wouldn't believe the number of people that screw this up and can't figure out they will run out of hours before a trip can be delivered. They accept a load and realize a day later that they need to have the load repowered by someone else because they shouldn't have accepted the load.

Starting with a recap app and giving away 10k units to have it out on the market, I could see you eventually selling 200-300k units at $2 a pop. And build from there as you have input and drivers using your first driver specific app.

Sorry for the delayed response . I was out a couple of days and this thread got buried . Our Blackberries replaced the Qualcomms and we use the Edge system . It's through Sprint .It automatically progresses through the macros . Once we accept the load the next option is begin movement ,then arrive at shipper , and so on . The company has put in extra links like Yahoo maps . There are a lot of options like traffic and weather that I never use . I run regional dedicated and most of my trips are only 2 days so I don't need that much info .
