Opted? Was he told by dispatch that HD is closed? I don't think dispatch would be so kind to share such details with a mere drivah....

    Im stubborn.

    Consider this.

You refuse a tampa load. Dispatch fires you. Now what? No storm for you. YAY....

    NO...
    I'm already under the load.
After the flat has delayed me, with a weather event headed that way I would not have attempted delivery

Tosses cards on the table and shoves the pile of chips to your side.

    You win. I overlooked that.

Bottom line for me is if I run a trucking co instead of working for one I don't fire this driver.

I enjoyed a certain amount of this debate with you tonight, I thank you.

But If I was a company who is facing a claim for that cargo that will potentially drain more dollars for months or years to come... I would wonder if that driver is worth it's value.

I don't like to think at that level, taint too many drivers worth that kind of money to keep.

I suppose you can write off the entire cargo against uncle sam pleading storm losses... but does that not make you feel dirty a little bit at tax time?

I know Im stubborn. I cannot help it. Ive already cashed out at he driver level, but when this goes to the type of thinking where say a owner of a trucking company and... what? 1000 trucks have to think about this hour of the night prior to morning? Im not exactly that kind of material, I'll give it a go. But Im not trained in business Law and trade best practices. It's not my strength.

Someone needs to be paid, and someone needs to be fired. Somewhere in the entire company structure.

And after this is all over and done. I propose this...

Write or revise current policy to allow drivers the safety of saying I aint going into a storm like that with this load today. Without fear of being fired or placed into a impossible sitaution.

I allow this because not everyone likes or want to deal with Irmas.

Ive started to get rumors that maybe California is fixing to have a quake this hour. I think to laugh it off as conspiracy but Mexico had similar lights prior to a big quake last week. Do I send drivers that way? As a company?

on a whisper or a fear? Taint nothing there except that someday there will be a problem. You cannot live in fear and try to stay in a safe space with your precious load... oh wait...

let me revise that again, ive said in the past, I don't mind sitting with a nice meal in Somerset PA waiting for the NOAA high wind warnings that roar through that particular mountain range towards the Breezewood area in storms that are too high for big trucks. I'll wait a while. But Im not sitting on my load all week. I need to be paid for my miles.

which means the industry needs to consider a salary system instead of a 1930's era miles system of pay. Then I will be more than happy to protect your load a week away from a storm and mobs.

I truly walked away happy because I thought I said what I can. But everything new that comes up raises even more thoughts... on my end.

I work in a sector of our industry that is hazardous and pricey.
Part of our hiring process and the final decision to make an offer to a applicant is if management believes they can think on their feet, can they make good decisions based on training, protocol and life experience.
In the 24/7 world we work in the powers that be are not always available to give guidance or authorization when the unexpected or unusual happens.
It appears to me this driver did what he thought he had to do, what he thought was the right thing to do.
I don't believe it was malicious on his part but how can I know from just a web story.
Anywho it's a feel good story for me from a nasty couple of weeks down south IMHO

He has a GoFundMe page to help him through this difficult time. I'm going to donate $10,000.00 and use this credit card I found at the fuel islands to fund the donation.
