I’m a student currently trying to get my CDL A license. I live in the DMV between Baltimore, MD and D.C. My question is, which companies are best for newbies like me. I’m mostly concerned with getting the proper training and experience. With the focus being on teaching new drivers andhaving patience with them while they build there skills?

It depends on how often you want to get home, how long you can stay home, how long you can stay out, what type of freight you want to haul (dry van, reefer, tanker, flat bed) and the pay & benefits you need. It's going to be a 60-70 hour per week job and minimal/legal time off per day/week.

If your driving, criminal, job history are spotless you will have the most options. Each negative in one of those records will subtract some companies that will hire you. The more desperate or in a hurry to get working right now will push you to jump into a company telling you what you want to hear.

The best thing to do is to decide specifically if you want to work locally, do over the road, whether you do some labor & drive or just drive, etc, plus the questions in the first paragraph. Without you making those choices your question is like asking "what's the best food for a hungry person to eat." It depends on many preferences you have and your goals. Avoid CR England, no matter what. Avoid any Lease-Purchase driving. Avoid ANY 1099 jobs. If you just flip a coin and hope it works out, there is an 80-90% chance you will be out of the industry within months.

In addition to the sage advice given above.....

Stay the #### away from any/all jobs or accounts that service/deliver to any of the so-called "dollar" stores....Dollar General, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, etc.

Those jobs (for a new driver) will chew you up, and pretty much toss you back out. It's a great way to get started off on the wrong foot. Leave those jobs/accounts to drivers with at least 3 years of experience.

Also: if you possibly can--when you do get your CDL, go ahead....and get ALL those CDL endorsements--tanker, hazmat, and also....the doubles/triples.

Those endorsements are door-openers....and money-makers!!! :Transportation cost

Schools - Drive For DTI | Dot Transportation, Inc.
Will I be paid for schooling and/or training?
This is highly dependent on the school and/or company you’re training with. At DTI, we pay prospective drivers $800 a week throughout training (approximately eight weeks) as well as $800 a week for students enrolled in one of our DTI Network schools.

So, you're already enrolled in CDL school?
Contact Dot Foods (Dot Transportation) about hiring after you finish school.
Will reimburse CDL school tuition back to you.
