For some it is, if you have the right stuff. I didn't have it. My technical ability was there easily, but didn't possess the people skills needed to succeed in an office environment.

Was trying to communicate to people that truck drivers make as much if not more than IT folks depending. I've been on that side of the fence, it's not necessarily any more lucrative than driving a truck.

In my opinion truck driving is a lot more fun and there's less to worry about and the privilege of living on the road and seeing the country. I get to make a lot more and most of the time I feel like I am barely working.

If you can write code the world is at your feet.

I can write code. A lot of kids you run into can do that now easily. It's taught in grade school. I almost took a job teaching elementary age kids coding Java for a private company. Teaching kids was/still is another interest of mine.

It's not as lucrative as you might think anymore. Computers and technology is getting to the point to where computers can program themselves, just like trucks can drive themselves. Also programming can be outsourced. Truck driving cannot.

Besides all that, any program of value is coded by dozens if not hundreds of programmers. If the world was at your feet you would be able to program your own programs and sell them for a cost of your choosing. That just isn't the case anymore. Technology has come too far. There are too many specialities even within software development. You have a team of people that programs just the user interface, another team that focuses on security, another team that worries about networking, etc etc.

That's not even getting into different branches of software development... coders that program software for financial experts, computer game programmers, programmers that program medical equipment... you need knowledge in the field you are programming for.

And a truck driver can potentially make just as much and not have to worry about any of that.

Friend of mine bought some software in China for playing with ecm tuning and other things. He went over there to get it. He even used it to program a lease car he had; high performance tune-up and also it only shows half the mileage he runs. If he drives it 50K miles it only will register $25K miles.
He installed the software in his laptop. I don't have the expertise to do all that.

I read somewhere that truck driving is the most common job in America. It must be because it cannot be outsourced. Just like people come from all over the world to study here in America, then run back to their countries with their degrees. This country is full of teachers, truck drivers, financial experts.... and lawyers.

The last time I delivered to a truck stop me and the fuel desk lady were the only native English speakers in the place. Trucking is being outsourced, just not in the traditional manner.
