Excuse me but I think fat men in speedos everywhere, would find it to be offensive to be chosen as the lesser of two evils.

i was just a rookie at the time in a slow truck but i remember when they took off the 55 mph speed limit and fuel was cheaper
there were many more big fleets running 70 mph.
prime was screaming down the interstate
chicken haulers running coast to coast takin a little nap now and then
no wing man,on guard, lane departure collision avoidance systems Elog def emission systems some qualcomm not monitored much, no automatic tranny or sleep studies out of route ok
then we lost most of our freedom gradually after 911 and got company men telling us what the math is and many are automatons

It's funny how the ones who think they're witty and "quick" are the most clueless ,and prove it when they open their mouths or type on their keyboard. I'm sure any current green Beret or Navy seal would gladly love to hear your sarcastic (which usually means bitter and has a ######
    Life) views of our military.

Anybody driving over 10 or 20 years and hopefully has figured out how to make real money in this industry reading what you wrote would cringe at how brainwashed you are by the pennies per mile mentality these large companies have indoctrinate into people like you.
Being labeled a "good boy" by your superiors and the rules they place upon you while they watch your every move is a very sad depiction of a good portion of what is driving for many fleets today.I would hope you get fed up with living like that and would one day find a good paying hourly job ,or 30% of the trucks gross revenue job and let them worry about their fuel and you going 1 mph over the speed limit instead of placing those concerns on you. Trucking has been very good to me as a company driver, owner operator and multiple business owner.I can tell you it wasn't working for pennies per mile ......ever.

Just as a matter of fact,

Part of that season, Race For The World’s First Atomic Bomb: A Thousand Days Of Fear (BBC4) tells the story of the scientists at the Los Alamos facility in New Mexico who secretly raced Hitler to produce the bomb that would end the second world war.

So it was a race to see who would get it first.... we did. I'd call that a win. It also saved many American lives. I'd call that a win -- wouldn't you?

You can read all about it, if you want too? Click on the above.

You ragged on a guy, insinuating that he was less than a man, for insisting that his equipment get repaired - without knowing any of the surrounding circumstances.

Then you make assumptions about me, implying that I am a drone that needs to "throw off the shackels of oppression " of being paid by the mile, again knowing next to nothing about me. Percentage pay isn't necessarily the best, nor is hourly, nor is piece rate (milegae). Joining a union might be beneficial for some, going o/o may be beneficial for some. There is no "ONE RIGHT WAY", there is only what works for the individual.

    They

I don't Rag or make assumptions. Some men are less than a real man,sad but true . I know some woman who are more of a man (in a good way) than many men. Your right thoughHopefully when your feelings stop being hurt, you'll stop being an oppressed ,shackled pennies per mile drone :)

First off roadtech, thanks for your post because the exchange between you and
GENTLEROGER has been fascinating to me. It shows how different two men (drivers) think and both are justified in his opinion.

GENTLEROGER talked about a fuel mileage bonus which adds up to some pretty serious cash at the end of the quarter for him.

You seemed to dismiss the bonus as some kind of carrot the company offers to good boy drivers who have been manipulated by the company in order to save money via fuel savings. And, that a better paying job would serve him better without having to worry about fuel savings.

My thinking is: Maybe he will, one day, find a job that pays better regardless of fuel mileage BUT, in the meantime I can fully understand his interest in getting that bonus.

There is the dichotomy.... it has to be recognized that jobs which might be considered (more or less) entry level in this industry (and any other industry) are what new drivers have to deal with.

Sure! We old timers can boast about how companies exploit employees and manipulate them to better serve the companies interest, but these new guys have to get a start somewhere and denigrating a man's only option is really not fair.

I know you have been open and honest about your success and failures, and maybe I have seemed a little closed minded a time or two, but as fellow truckers we all have to allow for one another's needs and concerns.

Having said that, I still dislike flip flops.
