I think acceptance of others, regardless of the politically correct approach to the subject, is based on 2 things.
If someone looks strange, I think most people are cautious with regard to extending greetings and or kindness. I think that is as true now as it was in the 60's. And it goes way passed the 60's. The way a person presents themself is a big "tell" about who they are. So like the old saying; "clothes make the man" is still true, though the politically correct will dispute it, privately they are prejudice. It is a primal instinct and a darned good one.
- Actions
- Appearance
Then there are 'actions.' Actions are a great "tell." If someone is acting strangely, then likely, they will be strange. There are all different degrees of strange and our brain processes 'strange' very quickly. It's another primal instinct which we rely on very heavily to make quick decisions as to whether someone might be worth being nice to. Civility is a culmination of instincts, appearance worthiness and tradition. So if you don't look or act worthy, then my civility will reflect my instincts.
That said, you can't always "judge the book by its cover" so cautiousness will likely be my guide, and my instincts will tell me how to proceed...... And I dont have a lot of time to let weirdos prove themselves worthy. Yup, civility seems to have declined.
- We dont have the time or the desire to extend kindness to people whom don't appear to be worthy... there's lots and lots of them.
- Civility is in large part, good manners.... and there are a lot of people who don't have good manners.
