The year was 1973 and America just landed on the moon a few years back. Vietnam still lingered in the air from PTSD and the friends who never made it home. Cocaine was making its debut along with Disco.

OPEC and the fuel crisis was just around the corner.

Freedom was yet to transpire in the trucking industry. Plastics had decades to develop before daily drivers could fashion crocks and beanies.

I sure do miss the smell of Napalm and everyone wearing the same thing. Why cant we be more like North Korea?

If he only knew how many people I knew that learned the hard way.
Frost bite while waiting for rescue at an accident
Toes missing from dropped loads, lifts and trucks running over them
Serious skin abrasions because of shorts
Falling from trucks, trailers with poor soled shoes

We don't wear what we do to fit in, we wear it because it's the best thing to wear based on the job description and common risk factors.

Young folks just don't want to face facts and would rather try and outsmart themselves by being stupid!

Ehhh… In the summer I’m in shorts and sneakers. All summer long you’ll see OTR van/reefer drivers dressed like cowboys and construction workers. But you do you. Let me worry about my legs getting a boo boo :)

A truck runs over your foot you got big problems no matter what you got on your feet.

I am an old man, been there done that personally, know someone who experienced it or seen it with my own eyes more times than I can count. The one thing that sticks now is I wish I would have listened to those older wiser people that told me better, that way I wouldn’t have all these aches and pains, pins and screws holding me together and scars to constantly remind me of my young and stupid ways!

I aint a spring chicken anymore either. 20 years construction and 5 moving furnitures. One thing I’ve noticed is some will get hurt no matter what safety gear they wear. All my pins and scars and aches and pains would be exactly where they are regardless of any safety gear.

I did when I was in my mid 20s have an 80 year old guy walk up to me, look me in the eye, and said “you have to take better care of yourself, you never know how old you might get”. I had just broken both hands, crashed my motorcycle (didnt scratch my helmet), gotten thrown in jail lost my job and girlfriend in an 2 week span and his words still play in my head at times. It’s your actions that will get you hurt more than anything. Worked high rise construction for 20 years with hardly a scratch.

In fact thats what led me to trucking to save my back. Short of crashing or getting run over, trucking is not that hazardous if you’re careful. Well I guess theres health issues that need addressing, but dressing like a cowboy aint going to encourage you to take a few laps walking around the shipper or truckstop every day.

I don't understand why companies allow their drivers to look like the slobs they are. They're representing the company and they show up at their customers looking like a joke.

I guess companies are that hard up.
