I have him sign an agreement. First set is on me, second set is on you. What are they now $30 a pop?

I see it as a tool of the trade like work boots or gloves. Securing a load is a drivers responsibility. How he does it should be on a driver. A company doesn't buy you a crowbar, hammer, broom, etc. It should fall in that category.

Its an interesting question, but put it in perspective if the driver left his lumber tarps at a customer would you eat the cost for that? Wear and tear items are one thing but failing to take care of accessories are another, imo. That's why I focus on the relationship aspect of things, if you want to continue the relationship then eat it, if not put it on the driver. I don't really care if its right or wrong, however id also be inclined to make the first time free with a talking to. Id assume you didn't hire the driver without knowing him, so cut him a break.

When the driver gets an unsecured load ticket it is your responsibility. So your 1.5 cents count. :)

I had a driver left a set at a receiver one time - he owned up to it, then 3 or 4 receivers later he saw some load lock bars in the corner of the warehouse. Bought him off the forklift driver for $10 a piece. I am fairly certain that they weren't the forklift drivers' load locks to begin with but I do have to tip my hat to that driver for owning up to the mistake and taking it upon himself to replace them. It sure beats the "shrugged shoulder" look or the "not my problem" attitude some drivers would give you in that situation.

I had a driver picked up for that, left hist cheater pipe on the flatbed and then drove thru a scale. Its the little things. I was just a lowly dispatcher back then, so it didn't bother me as much.

I'll give a few other sides to this, I have gotten load locks shoved back in my trailer from the trailer that had been in the place ahead of me, so +2 for me. I have told people who have told me they would take care of them and I ended up going in to find them because they get forgotten. This has happened often, and then we get trailer loaded so far back you have to stand on the ground to put them in; that is just ignorant IMO.

I seldom bothered with them, and a guy I know refuses to bother with them, but we are supposed to use them now, even though the outside carriers don't have to use them if they don't want to. Air ride trailers tend to reduce the damage to where there is none whether locks are used or not.

The ones I carry ride in the trailer, whether used or not, until I get back, and then they ride ahead of the quarter fenders until I'm ready to leave again.

Most product damage and trailer damage occurs at shipping from my experience, but the driver always gets blamed by shipping.

I love getting them in trouble with the pictures taken of shipping screw-ups. They deserve it.

    i agree with you volvo

an owner has to take responsibility along with the profits

employees are just that, they work for the company, they are not bound to replace things that break or lost or stolen

I feel sure he has worried about this, & sorry it happened. I would eat the 1st ones, & warn him, the next ones will be on you.

Be a good boss & you will be rewarded.
