SSB doesnt change freq it changes transmission mode. I monitor 14.287 between 10-6 central time and routinely am on 7.191 the remainder of the time with the exception being sometimes i will go to 75/80 meter band if im driving through the night. KB5EAG

So you have a ham license? Is it worth it to get one?

Not quite sure how to answer your question.Yes I am a licensed 'Ham' and have been for nearly 30 years. I enjoy the regular nets and dxing i do. I also enjoy the endless tinkering to improve my station on the road. During this current solar cycle propagation is at an all time low so as I improve my station for current propagation i will get even more enjoyment out of future cycles.

The reason I ask is because I was thinking about getting a ham license but wasn't sure what all you can do with it and if its worth the effort to get on there. I suppose it opens up a larger world of radio to an individual?

Not to sound like a smart butt, but if you studied just for the Technician class license, you could have answered your own question about AM/SSB. So is it worth it? Yes, because you can learn so much about radios, atmospheric conditions, antennas, and on and on. The possibilities are endless if you're interested enough.

Yea I've been consumed by CB radio for some time now. I've just started wondering about Ham. That's why this thread interests me even though I have nothing to monitor the frequencies mentioned here it still interests me a bit.

The 1st thing a smart butt will do is try to conceal himself by saying he's not one.
    Just saying!

    That's interesting.

Do you just monitor, or can you transmit at those frequencies from your truck as well?

What type and length antenna(s) do you use at those frequencies?

Some guys use what’s known as a screwdriver antenna.

If I had to put a number on it. I imagine around 80% of the guys that are amateur radio operators today, started out with cb radio.
