Drivers with Disabilities

Not sure about the disability side of your question...
US xpress is 100% auto shift fleet, I know they take student drivers but I think you need to have graduated from a school... (that's something you may need to ask them about)

I am not real sure, but I can say we have a truck driver who has a hook arm on his right side and he drives just fine? I am not sure what he drives or anything. But anyone that can set their mind to it, can do it!

 

I could have swore that you had to have two arms two legs both feet and hands to be a truck driver with a CDL. Depending on how many fingers you where missing, that is also a limiting factor.

 

When my boyfriend went to driving school a few months ago, we saw a man in a wheelchair come in and enroll. We were wondering how that would work, how he could pass a DMV physical, etc. Apparently, this guy started school a few weeks after my boyfriend so they interacted some. This guy owned his own tractor, and had everything specially outfitted just for him. He was going to have some restrictions placed on his CDL, but if you test in an automatic instead of a shift that restriction would be placed on anyone's license. So I guess that it is entirely possible. Go for it!

deBoer trains new students at Fox Valley Technical College, perhaps the best publicly funded truck driving school in the nation. Since deBoer uses only automatics, that is what you train on. Read my thread "The Secret deBoer Letters" for my expierences. Warning, it's done a bit humorous, but mostly serious about what goes on here.

 

bandit24 I wish you all the luck, with a not giving up attitude you can do it. I had driven with Gout in my left Knee and had to lift that leg onto the Clutch to use it on the way in and then hop across the yard to turn in my paper work. Though that night I was placed into the Hospital for a week.

I have use of all my limbs, but at times they not function well. I had came off the road for the last 7 years, but I am going to make a come back. So I wish you all the luck, it can be done.
