So, I have a great job with good company as it is, but I have a baby on the way and I'm looking for something that gets me home at night. Seems like the majority of home daily positions in my area are either trash or ready mix. I spent 2 years working with a beer distributor fingerprinting product and while it was tiring, it was ok, I could handle it.
I drive a transfer route now, and honestly my body and weight are going to hell with the inactivity, the terminal is a huge hike from my house, and quite honestly I'm bored to death with the repeated grind of driving the to same 3 places week after week. What do you guys think about driving a ready mix truck? I think since I've done beer I could handle the physicality of the job, but I wanted some opinions.
Driving a cement truck?

I drove a rear discharge ready mix truck for a time. It's not really any more physically demanding than any other driving job. You'll have to learn a bit about concrete and slump. But that's not too difficult either.
The biggest thing with driving a mixer is making sure you leave plenty of stopping distance. You hammer the brakes and all that concrete moves forward. Which takes a lot of the weight off the rear axles. Scary as hell the first time it happens.
I may still be doing it if the building boom didn't fizzle out and I got laid off.Frank Burns, REO6205, qbertsrevenge and 1 other person Thank this. -
I deliver to the guys that roll cement (cement powder bulk tank to their silos)... Most of them seem chill, and fairly fit... It's Maine, so we got a (generally) older work force, but those cats seem to handle it fine... It's also seasonal here, so I don't know what type of position you're looking at... Being South, I'd presume a year round thing?
And good luck in Game 6, Q.
