Yawn I grow tired of this foolish back and forth. So last post to this topic. I suppose if you found a hill that is 3% on one side and 7% on the other. While you were loaded heavy, you might smoke the heck out of your breaks. That's why no rule is absolute. Sometimes you have to engage your brain. If you smoked in 8th, I guess you would have caught on fire in 9th. Like the poster who suggested use the same gear you created in said.

    So. There's your answer ...

3rd or 7th or perhaps 8th, or somewhere in between. That's as specific as we truckers can be. One of those should work

The only answer is: a couple of gears lower than you think.

It's an old platitude, but still worth repeating. You can go down a hill too slow many, many times, but you can go too fast only once.....

Pick the lower gear, and toodle down the hill, stress free. If it was too low a gear, try the next gear up on the next trip. Enjoy the scenery. Boring is good.....

I think the best solution is to not do anything. Then put your super trucker hat on, go find a driver counter and tell all about how you do it.

I once asked a School of Lunch Counter about a bad bridge that I was not sure about. I said maybe I race across at 100 mph so that Im through there before the bridge wants to fall down.

They laughed me out of that room. To this day I feel a little shame at being laughed at like that. But I can totally understand how stupid that statement was. That community is helpful even if they laughed you out of that room like that group did. They were either using paper towels to clear the tears or trying to breathe in situations close to seizures.

It hurt my feelings at 21, but I needed that. It's a lesson.
