That may be the case but it was no excuse for that particular driver to be terminated. He took 2 AK-47 rounds to his left arm and now has limited use of it. They canned him for "having health issues" which is rediculous. I just find it hard to believe that the drivers are not allowed to carry a firearm. By the way....the 'response' time to get back to that driver? 40 minutes, which I can imagine felt like an eternity in hell.

a big "EFF YOU!" goes out to the virginia national guard for leaving and letting three men die that day, and for also letting three others be seriously injured. another "EFF YOU!" out to halliburton/kbr for terminating mr. wheeler after he took 2 rounds to his right arm. also for the no firearms policy. that's just plain crazy-foolish. i can't believe i was about to drive for those butt holes. i'll gladly deal with whiteout conditions in wyoming rather than the hellish nightmare of driving in iraq.

I'm surprised he didnt make a run for it into the truck behind him and i'm doubly surprised he didnt at least have a "illegal" pistol to shoot back. Curious why the truck in back didnt try and push him forward or at least drive up next to him so he could hop in.. personally i would have been planning my exit strategy out of there instead of yapping on the CB and saying God #### every two seconds..

He panicked....Those european trucks have to reset when you try to crank them over..You have to wait like 5 seconds from the quater turn till you turn it fully..He wasnt doin that and thats why the truck didnt start..KBR used that as a training video for the recovery and convoy drivers when I went through houston.I have been on both sides of convoying in Iraq, miltary and doin civillian recovery..You can hear the escorts say eff em/who cares!!!Those soldiers were garbage escorts plain and simple!

the driver in truck 4 was killed instantly by a sniper's bullet. that's why you see his truck lying on its side. it had jack-knifed first, then the brakes from the gun truck were slammed, causing truck 5 that mr. wheeler was driving to skid, stall, and become a sitting duck. there was speculation that the truck had also been hit by an rpg and caused the truck to become unresponsive. either way, he's one lucky man to have survived that crap. those national guard soldiers out of virginia are the definition of yellow. had those been marines, we all know what the outcome would have been in that ambush. all of those towel heads would have been slaughtered.

I dont think it was a marine/army thing..I was at ramadi a bit civllian side, and while nothing happend as bad as that it started that same way..Just a simple wrong turn through a bad town. And that recovery was for 6 mraps that were buried to their doors in mudd cause their operators didnt know what they were doing...3.14,dont turn it into a peeing contest between army and marines..

well, if the part-time sissies in gun truck #3 actually protected the convoy, keven dagit, sascha grenner-case, and christopher lem would still be alive today. an investigation was done by the u.s. military and they did, in fact, determine that gun truck 3 had abandoned the convoy. they straight up bolted out of there without firing a single shot. the other gun trucks stuck around to return suppressive fire.

"part time" had nothing to do with it..I am reserve, and I take it very serious...There are many "part time" soldiers getting pulled from college, and good paying jobs to go there, and do multiple tours at that..Judging by u only bein 26,you couldnt have done to long on active duty to long...My reserve unit would have never let that happen..And just so you know about the rules of engagement, and escalation of force,u cant shoot unless you have a + ID on a target..The army dosnt rely on pray and spray and killin non coms...Other branches might, but not the army..

Good explination. Although it is a shame, these issues happened over there and eventually accounted for quite a few KIA for us. (Green machine). When I was there,90% of KBR drivers were TCN. VERY POOR COMMO!We ran daylight convoys (mostly) until May of 04. Then all after 1800. Running in the evening helped alot because of the heat, and also diminished small arms fire. This does not make you exempt from getting lost however in the middle of bum F Iraq tho.
Basic thing is KBR's MCT sets up convoys with an Army liason. Once KBR got involved in the movemt control, things started going south.

Bottom line on this ambush in question; Where was the rear frikin gun truck? That truck has the responcibility to move forward and protect downed vehicles until the rest of convoy is out of kill zone. Then they reconsolidate.
