I am 18 and thinking about if it is a good idea to join the military and drive trucks there. I have a few questions though. What do you haul in the military? Is any of it otr work? Also, when I come out can I buy a truck and lease onto a company? Thanks.

There are just SO MANY questions to ask even before you THINK about hauling stuff...

Why join in the first place?
    What branch?
    Why THAT branch?
What is your interest(s) OTHER than driving?
Do you have a criminal record?
Can you pass a drug test?
    etc...

I'm not trying to dissuade you from doing anything... As a Retired Vet, I would like to make sure that you think about a lot of things before you commit to anything...

I agree with Nukem. If you really want that path, look into the Navy Seabees. Check out the rating "EO". Good Luck.

Military service is a great way to spend those 3 years until you are 21. I actually am delighted you are considering this. Who knows you might find military service as something you might want to spend the next 20 years doing.

    Seebees...

If we can't fix it... Screw it...

If we can't screw it... Kill it...

If we can't kill it... Try to **** it anyway...

:p ... and yes I have a LOT of respect for Seebees, the jack of MOST trades, not all...

I repeat what I recently told my 19 year old son — “The only way to find out for sure is to put the uniform on and go do it”. He chose the USAF and ships out for boot camp in a couple weeks. I guess you can chose what you do now days — when I went in you, took a battery of tests and the needs of the service dictated where you went.

My stepson joined the Navy Seabees and got his cdl there. The day he was discharged, he hit the road pulling refrigerated coast to coast. I was his dad from the time he was in kindergarten.
You'll drive all types of equipment and lots of flatbed hauling equipment.

@Chinatown can also fill you in on some of the extracurricular activities possible if you should happen to choose to go in.

I brought my oldest to all the local branch military bases (in Hampton Roads, VA) and talked to people serving, not some recruiter trying to gain quota...

He ended up choosing Army Medic (68W)

I say this, because, he was given the best informed information (at the time) that he could get.

In the military, you primary job will pretty much be secondary. There is SO much going on that your commanders, officers, enlisted appointed over you will demand of your attention, that (even if only 4-6 years) for a short time, it will become a life style. Not just a job.

Take your ASVAB and then see what you will qualify for. You never know... a TOP SECRET clearance and the aptitude for attention to detail, might land you as an INTEL type of person. :)

... and yes, I AM speaking from 24 years experience... :p
