Think it took me four years and two companies to really see and somewhat experience the lower 48. Also greatly depends on your company.

You won't remember most of your interstate drive time but you sure as anything remember those country back roads.

A couple years back I was driving up through the desert in California, US395 I think it was, came into a sleepy little town called Pleasantville, I believe... Population 17. I didn't really have time to get to the next town so I pulled into the truck stop there and went to sleep. Got up the next morning to about 25 other trucks there.

We more than doubled the population of the town over night. LOL.

Americana is still out there, sometimes you have to seek it out though.

Biggest surprise for me was Palm Springs. Don't think they can squeeze anymore wind turbines in.

If I didn't have obligations, I'd probably drive based out of around Vegas.

There is still a lot to see across this country. I never get tired of seeing this nation. I try to get off the freeway from time to time, just to remember what it used to be like when I first started driving. We did not have nearly as many freeways back then. In fact, going to California you would travel part of the way on Route 66, since I-40 was not completed. It was a much more interesting trip. The food was also much better with more variety.
