My husband is considering making a switch from his desk job to truck driving. He drove farm equipment, trailers, etc from an early age so I would say he is comfortable with the prospect of driving. What we wondered is, if he goes to a trucking school here in NJ to obtain his CDL, would he be likely to find P/T weekend work driving until he was able or ready to make the full switch to F/T driving? Are there truck driving jobs that require a CDL but not necessarily are for tractor trailers (or buses)? Thanks very much for any advice.

I'm sure there is work like that in your area, but he would not be considered at most places until he has a year experience......and the only place he would get that is an "over the road trucking company" (Full-Time), and after school an OTJ training program for a few weeks with the company of his choice. There are so many qualified drivers out of work and insurance company regulations.......so I would say chances today are not good. He could get a P endorsement and some training from a local bus company and do casino runs on the week end.......there used to be lots of those jobs in my area, but now many retired drivers in my area need those jobs to supplement their Social Security Check.

i dunno, I for one REFUSE to go to NJ, as well as many many other drivers, The last co I worked for just took it to "the locals" in NJ and NY and let them run it in.
