I have 4 days off every week, I need a backup plan, my wife and I have driven across country 3 times and enjoyed every second of it, in 15 years my kids are out of the house but due to company bankruptcies and pension raiding I’ll never be able to fully retire, I’m 41 now and have time to make something work, so my question is can I start driving part time now for extra income and experience then later on when the kids graduate high school quit my job and drive with my wife and see the country? Thanks guys.

You probably can but it is going to be tough finding a company. You will probably have to aim towards a company that runs team and be like a "fill in guy". If you don't already have your cdl you are probably most likely going to have to drive full time for a year or so before doing just a part time gig. Companies get scared when you are out of a truck for periods of time. Maybe give us a little more info so that we can help you out. Do you have your cdl? How long? Where are you living?

From the time you start your schooling including orientation and training will be at least two solid months. From there you will probably not be able to do part time until you put in about a year of driving over the road. Maybe you could look into some kind of local gig. Not easy to get into but is possible. Good luck.

I would look into any local food, beer, liquor, soda, ext type delivery companies,...

More than likely you would start out as a truck loader or drivers helper, But as time goes by most will train you for the cdl,......

Never know, You might end up with a good local job out of it,...
