if you deliver, and got nowhere to go but point b. what you gonna do???? cuz sometimes. point b is a few miles away. and rarely takes you back to point a.

on paper, i've always off duty. on box. it's pc. never been questioned yet.

i wouldn't think it would matter if he's in his own personal semi. he's technically unloaded, back to the yard, and pretty much done. off duty. why bother logging his own semi to go home.

The best bet.. Call your local Highway Patrol office and ask the commercial officer.. He knows for sure. It used to be if you were in your own tractor, on the way home, not being under dispatch, or under a load. Then you didn't need to run a log book. But that was years ago.. Call the cops.. They will know for sure.

Orig OP says it's his own personal vehicle, so therefor, no log book needed. Just like a RV set up to haul a 5th wheel, no log book needed, however, need correct license if has air brakes. I am a bit curious why OP uses a class 8 for his personal vehicle.

I use my big truck to tow my offroading rig, on a car trailer. I do not need to use a log book, even though my rig is registered for commerce etc.
As it was explained to me by a highway patrol officer....
If you are not in competition, and there is no chance of money being made, have at it. Personal/pleasure use is fine, and no log book etc needed, period.
Obviously, I am pulling the Jeep with a 18' car trailer, and not my RGN most of the time, but I have taken my RGN with 3 or 4 jeeps on it and never been bothered.
No load, personal use, no log book. Obviously still have to have a valid CDL, medical card, and the truck can get DOT'd at any time so it needs to be up to snuff, but log books not needed.

Some that are gone a lot, may have a car at home.. But to save a little on a second car, will use their truck as a second car to get home. Then their are those that are broke, don't have a car at all, and live in their truck. The only thing between them and being homeless is the repo man hasn't caught up to them . So that class 8 truck is their only vehicle.

I am guessing you missed the part where this guy is NOT USING his company truck to go on personal trips, but is using a Bobtail he owns personally for this.

Why not? His money etc after all.
With the price of some of these pickup trucks out today, a used semi truck can make a lot more sense than spending $50+k on a 1 ton.

    Compensating?

    :biggrin_25522:

Apologies to the OP... the Devil made me do it.

And just to contribute something useful, as described, you'd be considered the same as an RV.
