hey everyone i graduated school a few months back and ive been looking for local work and as many know the actual shot i have is minimal. i take care of my mom who is disabled so home time would be big to me since noone else is around to take care of her but me. she can function on her own at home but all the shopping etc is done by me. i looked into schneider northeast regional and the hometime and area doesnt look too bad. im a big guy..6'2'' pushing a bit over 300lbs. I sleep on my back or my stomach and im not a side sleeper. Are the beds in the sleeper at all comfy and is there room for a guy my size?? Ive also never really been away from home so its all new to me. Alot of fears im trying to overcome. Any feedback would be appriciated very much. thanks!!:biggrin_25525:

Think of a twin bed with a wall on each side can you sleep comfy in that? Some companys will not hire if you dont have the range of motion they deem acceptable. Just use caution they will give you pre hire although from what I understand a lot of companys will disqualify cause you dont fit threre profile. Hope this helps

I really wish you had come here before you went to that CDL school. You could have done some research and maybe gotten a job nailed down before spending the money. But, you're here now....so here goes:

Go to the warehouse district and see who is hauling out of them. Look specifically for daycabs or company locations in your area. Go in person to apply to them.

Also, apply to any company you can think of. Your CDL has a shelf life of about three months. You need to nail something down soon. Philly isn't the easiest place, but you do have some ports around there. Jersey may be a place for you to look as well.

Your inexperience will be your biggest obstacle. Your size will only hinder you if you're applying to Prime or CRST. Swift measures, but doesn't do anything but note it. In fact, you might call even them. They have Northeast regional, even if they have a not-so-stellar starting rate.

But, try looking locally first, since you need to be there for your mom.

Thanks guys. Local is pretty much impossible even with calling in favors. Schneider didn't sound too bad and the recruiter said my size shouldn't be a problem. Just wanted to ask guys who are out there doing it what its like in the sleeper. Is adapting to it a process?? My mom even is pushing me towards it and at this point I just sent in my last unemployment checks so I really am at the point where I have no choice in the matter.

I do enjoy driving and new scenery is pretty cool to me just worried about sleeping..don't want to drive irrisponsibally and tired and risk anyones safety. My instructors and some guys I've talked to told me pretty much after a long day of driving if you're tired then you are going to fall asleep

And also unfortunately the days of walking in and filling out for a job are gone..everywhere I've been gives me the "fill out an ap online" riff. I used to be able to lock down jobs in no time

Chevkid, maybe a school bus or limo service. I'm about the same size and am looking into that untill more weight comes off.

Some where on this site is a link to the physical that Schnider gives you before they hire you. I'll look for it and post it here if I find it.

Good luck with your mom. Being a caregiver can wear you out. Its ok to get help

You can also try losing the weight. I was at 270 pounds once (6'3") and only ate popcorn and water for two weeks while playing basketball and jogging until I could hardly walk and burned it all off. Now I remain at 205 - 210 pounds.

Two months? You are most likely going to have to go back to school. Most otr companies are going to want you directly out of school or you will have to take a refresher.
