    Hey all,

Well here we go....about 20 years ago I had to get my CDL...old job was a Gov. service....like city GOV.

Well we all went and got them...some class B some class A
then 4 years later we found out we did not need them...so I let mine go,,,

So now My job different job.....they wanted us to have one...so I went through all the trouble to get it back....Class A and DOT Physical card....but I have No driving experience....
I am in the Memphis TN. area.....where can one get a good starting job in this part of the country to get started...Now I know most all recruiters will promise you the world and when you get there they give you a globe

Mostly looking for a place to get some time under my belt....not as much the money...but home time and good starting pay....

    Any suggestions...????

I have a friend who has been driving for over 20 years...he has even said something about us doing some team driving and he would help me along...so that could be an option if a Company would go along with it...

Swift won't hire just anybody. They are getting quite choosy these days. But they will train you and have a large terminal in Memphis. The training facility is in Millington. Go online, put your application in and see where it goes. If you don't like what you hear, just don't accept the job offer.

If you want someone's perspective about the Millington school and running as a new driver for Swift, ask Oldnewbiegonnabe. He has very recent first-hand information about it. And he's an entertaining read, too.

    Good luck to you.

I am in the weigh scale business....our Sr. tech left about 6 weeks ago and they wanted me to have it to drive the Truck Scale test truck 2 days a month....I was to get a 1.00 per hour raise for getting my CDL....been 3 months and nope....not seen a penny

So I figured since I went through all the trouble to get it back....maybe I need to look at a driving career....and get out of the Scale business

How do you feel about OTR? Are you married? Kids? Are you willing to be away from home and live in a 4x8 box for a year or two or three?

Because that's what you'll be looking at if you go with Swift or any of the other major companies. I'm not knocking it but it is what it is. I honestly can't say whether I'm the exception or the rule but I never wanted OTR so I never did it. And yet I managed to find work when I needed it. Options are significantly more limited to be sure, but it can be done if you're patient and persistent.

All that being said, trucking isn't always all its cracked up to be. If you're well established in the scale biz and making an acceptable income from it, it might be in your best interest to stay put rather than start from zero at the bottom of the ladder in a field as rough as trucking can be.

My only suggestions are take it slow and make a smart choice. Keep in mind you don't have to live on the road and work for pocket change just because your "new" like all the recruiters will tell you.

    Dna Mach Thanks this.

Buddy of mine was checking in with a Co. that hauls doubles for Fed-Ex here in town as a team.....may work out because he would be lead driver....leave out on Monday...10 am and back by 10 am fri.....weekends off.....I could handle that kind of runs...money is ok....a lot better then I make now.......so who knows...I just need to keep Looking at options

I hate to say it, but at 50 with a clean record you could probably easily be trained by lots of the big OTR carriers, but a local LTL job in this market is very unlikely right now, with no experience at all.

Age discrimination is alive and well and 50 is too old for lots of these companies. You will simply be be told that you dont have enough experience, and no talk will have anything to do with your age at all.

BTW, I have seen ads for local driving gigs as low as $11.00 bucks an hour, so $16 .00 DPH isn't so bad.
