I always thought that would be a huge DOT safety violation too. Then I saw guys driving through the coups with them. Multiple occasions. So no way is it a DOT violation.
But I also think it's exceptionally dangerous. Nothing like having a point on the spear.
I also think an attorney would have a wet dream with that scenario.
Driving with tow hooks still in bumper? WTH

LOL...our mechanics spot-weld the pins. The tow hooks are expensive and that way we don't lose any of them.
I'd still like to see the DOT ruling that says tow hooks shouldn't be mounted unless they're being used. We go through Cordelia scales quite a bit and if it was against the law I'm sure those anal-retentive little twerps would have cited us for it.InTooDeep, FlaSwampRat, Cattleman84 and 1 other person Thank this. -
You cant be more right my friend ...thats what i do ...watch out when driving next to me
Humblepie and spyder7723 Thank this. -
I must have called the exceptional hooks when I've been stuck then, cause both times dude had one in his hand he pulled from his tool box before I even had my compartment open.

Come take out my tow hook if it bothers you so much

I guess I dont see how getting hit by a big truck with a tow hook would be any worse than getting hit by a big truck anyway. BTW, every decision need not be made this way anyway. You arent supposed to be having accidents in the first place.
Truckermania and Socal Xpress Thank this. -
To me it just screams punctured fuel tank. Why not just crash, whenyou can crash and flambe' right? And if you ask all the guys from the history of crash one, if they planned on crashing that day, I'll bet my paychaeck against yours you get a unanimous 'no'.tscottme Thanks this.

Tow hooks should go into their storage cassette under right hand side front of hood near frame.
As far as accident lawsuiting, it really does not matter.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
You have no idea about off road driving. It's not about getting stuck. You get lowered or winched up 35% grades in mud and snow with iron on.Lepton1 and spyder7723 Thank this.

Tow hooks stick out a whopping 3 inches, I am sure it would be the least of anybodys worries if a bug truck mowed them over, as far as bumping shins, reciever hitches is has the monopoly on that.
I do not remove my oversize signs when headed right back for another oversize load, I just put a twist in them, per what the dot told me to do.
My very first trip to prudhoe bay, 40 below and snow blowing sideways at a high rate of speed, when I unloaded.
The rear sign was on the pipe, so I had to remove it, the front stayed on the bumper right where it was.
The pipe dolly was loaded on my truck for the return trip, so basically bobtailed back.
When I got back to town and hit the scales, the seargent of the dot happened to be there and started reaming me for it, claiming everybody I had met thought I had an oversize on. lol, He ask why I didn't take it off or at least put a twist in it. I told him if he wanted to know the truth, it was friggen cold, and I just assumed that any FOOL could see I was bobtailing. lol Yea he wrote me up, no fine though. lol
Here any load over 10 feet wide requires a pilot car, so if we see beacons flashing without a pilot, we don't really pay it any attention, wider the pilot tells you exactly how wide it is, and if it is very wide I kill my headlights and turn on my work lights so folks can see the load anyway.okiedokie Thanks this.
