online classes not an option? What kind of office job are you looking for? Sales requires no experience in many cases.

in the Kansas City area there are tons of office jobs. People wont even take them. I have one of those "great IT" office jobs. Had a couple chances to get back into driving but did not want to work dock for an unknown amount of time. I want to drive flats, want challenge of securing load and everyday is different.
I worked union construction, driven and IT for past 15 years. Yes I make great money but that only goes so far. Life is short and to me being in my cube is very close to prison! -
Something like data entry or where I just shuffle papers around all day would be a great job for me. I don't do sales as I'm very shy and reserved. -
1.) I think it is important to do something you like. It makes it A LOT easier - money isn't everything. I mean, you need it - but - if you can find a way to make a decent living at something you really like, you'll be happier .. and when Daddy's happy? Everybody's happy!
2.) I think OTR truckers are probably more at risk for divorce; locally is better. It sounds like you might have the means to be more picky and wait to choose a local job.
3.) O/O - personally as a small business owner that has had great ups - and great downs? I would definitely stick with company driving until you KNOW KNOW KNOW the business of trucking.
4.) Good school. I would go with a private school and pay for it yourself. More flexible hours, and companies look on your willingness to committ to a personal school a plus.
5.) I am a relatively attractive female, and at school I am treated with proper respect by everyone. You might get razzed a little if you have trouble shifting - but - it really shouldn't be a problem. "Results may vary" depending on the area you live in, however.
6.) With GPS, and if you can use an atlas? This shouldn't be much of a problem.
7.) I guess that would vary by company. If you work hard (and I mean hard, and extra hours) - I've seen people mention here almost 6 figures.
8.) NO! You are NOT too old! There are senior citizens at my school! -
So, did we scare the original poster away? Or did he head off to truck driving school? Anyone seen him?
Hopefully he will came back and let us know what was decided. -
Don't be selfish, you have a good paying job that keeps you together with your family.

Don't do it. You will never be paid enough for the hours you work away from home. I would kill to have your job. It's rough out here not like smokey and the bandit portrayed it at all.

I really appreciate all the great responses that folks have given here. Thanks much to all that have taken time to give me advice.

I hear you and it is a thought that crosses my mind often...You are right, it is selfish of me. So I will stay trapped by $$$ in a job that makes me miserable.
We are heading for a fiscal cliff that may affect me and folks in my environment very soon. I am not silly enough to toss a way a high paying job in this economy but am looking for a backup plan. It would be selfish of me to leave for a trucking job now, but I would really love to. I am miserable where I am now and am getting up in age. So I can only "hope" to lose my job. If so, I have decided trucking is what I want to do. My family will adjust and my wife has given me her blessing.
I like driving and enjoy time alone. I also enjoy driving late at night. I'm hoping that I can get a job that puts me out on the road alone for long trips... I95 would be perfect
Thanks again all. We'll see what happens to my job. I'm tired of worrying and "fingers crossed" something good happens.... With this dream, I no longer worry. Its win win. (If I lose my job I am a trucker----win, if not I stay employed for my family) -
BTW, good to hear back from ya, keep us posted if this plan unfolds more.Puppage Thanks this. -
Well I dont really know much but can't you just drive local and still be around enough ? Unless you're actually wanting to drive cross country with a truck... I drove like 1,400 miles once in a car... it wasn't that bad really.....
