I was taught when pulled over, hands on wheel at 10 & 2. Any movement of hands, ask permission. “Registration is in the glove box Officer, is it OK if I get it out for you?” License is in my pocket,” etc. I do it to avoid getting shot. I think they need Universal rules for being pulled over. In Michigan for instance, you’re expected to stay in Vehicle with hands in view. A sure way to get shot, is to get out, and walk towards the Cops. They’ll jump out, weapons drawn, and yell freeze, put your hands in the air!! They’ll then ask you Why did you get out of the vehicle? In Louisiana on the other hand, you’re expected to get out of your vehicle, keeping hands in plain view. StayIng in the vehicle results in a jumpy Officer, weapon drawn, yelling to get out of the vehicle, asking you why you didn’t get out, when pulled over. A universal Procedure should be adopted for all States. A set of guidelines. Education should start in Drivers Training. Maybe added to the Test itself. Supported with Public Service messages. Less grey areas, less mistakes, and clear rules for everyone to follow. I think it would benefit everyone, including Officers. The idea that you can ignore an Officer, and complain when they do their job is asking for trouble. By the same token, no Officer should abuse his authority , because he’s having a bad day. A Professional doesn’t do that. I’ve had my share of encounters. Mostly good results. A couple bad ones, because of my own actions. Fair enough. I’ve had a few times that the Officer was the problem. Some don’t have any Character, and are just Bully’s with a badge and a gun. Their dangerous. Just like the Officer, a Citizen never knows who their dealing with when pulled over by the Police.
