There is at least 917,423 threads on DUI/ Drug/ Felonies and trying to get into trucking. Here's the facts.

If, within the last 5 years you've been convicted of DUI, you are untouchable. Nobody will hire you. Insurance requirements have set their own boundaries and so have the companies. The minimum time is 5 years. Some 7, some 10, some never. Before applying check the website or call for that company's requirements for DUI.

If, you've been convicted of a felony, most companies once again say 5 years, some 7, some 10, some never. If the felony had anything to do with a CMV, you are pretty much done for life. These are generally company requirements. There are some that will hire felons with less than 5 years from conviction. Beware, however, that they will take advantage of your situation and you will be paid significantly less than your counterparts without a felony.

When it comes to drugs and drug testing, every company does a urinalysis. Everyone. Many big companies are also going to hair testing too, which can go from anywhere from 90 days to a year. If you've done drugs within a year, do yourself a favor and do not apply. A failed drug test will disqualify you immediately and you will be untouchable to other companies. And that disqualification can last from a year to never being able to be hired. Most will require some sort of program to ensure you are drug free before even considering you.

While you are employed as a driver for any company, they do random drug and alcohol tests. Don't think you won't get hit for a urine test. You will. Also, its against federal regulations to have alcohol in a CMV. That is a giant no no that will get you put out of service and fired, and once again, unhirable. Best thing to do is not drink while on the road at all. And if you do drink, remember the rules. .04. That's your legal limit as a CDL holder. So if you're on a 34, don't drink the second day in. If you do, you're asking to lose your job. I hope this clears up anyone's questions.

So no one has ever been hired by a trucking company within 5 years of a DUI or felony?

    Something to add...

Random drug tests are just that. You may just get tested a week after you get hired, maybe a month later, maybe not at all for years. I know a guy who was tested 4 times in 6 months and another who's never been tested in 2 years. It really is random.

Then of course there are the trainers. Some companies test the trainers once a month. But of course this is targeted, not random.

I suggest you read page 31 in the Safety Regulations Handbook which outlines "undue waiting" at the collection site. You don't have to sit there in pain for hours! Tell the clinic you'll file a complaint if they are taking their sweet time. Take your handbook with you and show them how it's their responsibility to comply with the DOT regulations regarding this.

This isn't exactly correct. A DOT urinalysis will disqualify you and will be reported making you untouchable to other companies. A hair follicle test is not a DOT requirement. A Hair follicle test cannot be reported as a failed DOT drug test as it is not a DOT DRUG TEST. It is a company policy, and only serves the interest of the company that requires such a test.

Now to elaborate. A hair follicle test goes above and beyond a normal 5 panel DOT urinalysis.

The 5-panel Dot Urinalysis currently tests for the following:

The DOT testing at HHS-certified laboratories will continue to be a 5-panel drug test regimen, on and after October 1, 2010. The 5-panel regimen will remain:

    • Marijuana (THC)
    • Cocaine
    • Amphetamines
    • Opiates
    • Phencyclidine (PCP)
Under Opiates, DOT testing has always included confirmatory testing, when appropriate, for Codeine, Morphine, and 6-AM (heroin). Under Amphetamines, DOT testing has always included confirmatory testing, when appropriate, for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine. To this Amphetamines group, we are adding initial testing for MDMA and confirmatory testing for MDMA, MDA, & MDEA.
Broken out, here’s what drug testing will look like effective October 1st, with the confirmatory testing in red being new. [NOTE: Laboratories have always conducted confirmatory testing for 6-AM, when appropriate.]

    • Marijuana (THC)
    • Cocaine
    • Amphetamines

    • Amphetamine
    • Methampheamine
    • MDMA
    • MDA
    • MDEA

    • Opiates

    • Codeine
    • Morphine
    • 6-AM (heroin)

    • Phencyclidine (PCP)

A Hair follicle test can be much broader in scope, and test for several different commonly abused prescription medications. It also can be used to detect alcohol usage.

I agree that if you've done any drugs over the last year and are required to take a hair follicle test you should probably move on as it will most likely be a waste of your time, but it cannot be reported as failing a DOT drug screen by the company who chooses to administer it.

And yet, they cry driver shortage. Why not just make the penalty for failing a drug test or having a dui execution?

So here is the jist of it. Unlike the rest of American society, in trucking personal responsibility is necessary to get or keep your job. And the lack of it will cost you your job. It does not matter whether it is crime, booze, drugs, or speeding tickets in your car. Things that only you have control over can ruin or keep you from a career in trucking.
