The world is full of ppl that make mistakes and many didn't learn from it.If they did drugs drink a few months prior to filling out an application,do you think they deserve a second chance?I don't.Driving an 80k rig is no joking matter and drivers should be 100% clean and for yrs.

Good post pattyj...you and I agree most of the time...as far as 2nd chances go...not a big fan, for the reasons stated above obviously...but I don't own a truck , or a trucking company , nor do I own an insurance company. So I'm never gonna be in the position to say yeah or ney to a job applicant.....prolly a good thing too:biggrin_25525:. But all joking aside...if the conditions were right...I mean if a driver gets 1 DUI/DWI , and is not involved in an accident where people were injured/killed while being caught , I guess I could entertain some way of getting them back to work provided of course they would submit to random testing for at 3 years plus never ever get popped again. This might seem over-board to some , but in order to deter crime (and driving and drinking/impaired IS A CRIME ) the punishment must be unbearable to be a really good deterrent. Again just an OLD FART'S thoughts....Happy TRAILS...T

Even though I believe in second chances ONLY if he/she been clean and sober for yrs,if I owned a trucking company my tune may change.

Hardlyevr. Have you ever had a beer and drove your pov? Im not defending drunk drivers Im just saying people make bad choices sometimes. I cannot and will not pass judgement because I have had beers and drove and I thank GOD I didnt kill anyone but I did get a dui does that make me a bad person a bad trucker a bad dad no it makes me guilty of poor judgment but you know what I learned from my mistake and I guarntee I will never drink and drive again

Lots of good comments on here.My exp. and thoughts are if someone screwed up and was given a chance I think most would repay you by being and going above and beyond for the company helping them out. Maybe Im wrong but I try and see the good in people. Dont get me wrong some people you give a inch they take a mile but I think most people can see it coming and judge accordinly

Trucking is all about judgement. It is a safety sensitive job. You as a CDL holder should know better. Drinking and driving can kill. It can hurt people. And it will cost truckers their jobs. I'm going to say something that you probably won't like. Getting that DUI did make you a bad dad and a bad trucker and a bad person because of what you put in jeopardy. Looks like you've quit drinking and done what you can to redeem yourself. But that doesn't change the fact that a person driving drunk is selfish because of what they can take from people while driving drunks including their own family. And to answer your question,No. If I am going to drink, I am absolutley not driving.

Please forgive me Flatout, and tell me if I'm out of line...but no one in this discussion has said that you or any other person that has received a DUI was a bad person/bad trucker/bad Dad. You admittedly said it was a case of poor judgement and you stopped. I really think you are arguing the same ideas as most of us just using different words. It seems that we are sort of on the same page. The main thing I hate to see is when a person who has been convicted of the crime tries to say it was a "mistake" ...It's not , it's a choice...or a very poor judgement call (your definition)....the excuse of I made a mistake ...to me is just sour grapes. And before I'm asked...Nope don't drink , never have...watched 3 of my uncles die from liver disease and made my mind up I wasn't gonna turn yellow and die.
