so I recently bought an end dump. It's a dinasour, a 1985 Raven aluminum. It's in over all good condition for its age, but has given me fits recently with some lighting issues. The thing has an insane amount of lights, probably over to 30 on each side. I'm constantly having to change them out and it sucks. I guess my question is, is there a legal way to eliminate and permanently cover up some of those lights? My old Travis aluminum end dump only had three amber lights on each side and it was awesome. Did some searching and couldn't find anything. Maybe that's a hint that this is a dumb question so forgive me for my ignorance.
Dumb question about trailer lights..

The way I understand it by law any lights you have must work or you can get a ticket. If you have excess lights above and beyond what is required you can remove them. I don't think they can ticket you for holes where lights could go. Do you have any pics of the style of lights they are? Maybe we could come up with some ideas to cover the holes.

not a great angle but if you zoom in you can see there is a total of 36 lights on the side. If I could take them off and just leave a few so it will be legal, that would be sweet. I don't really want to roll down the road with 33 empty light holes, so I searched if there was such a thing as a light hole cover and nothing really seemed to exist. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I'm amazed at how many people don't know this.Toomanybikes and Blackshack46 Thank this.

Right! I knew of this from 2014. To find a credible link, I googled "FMCSA Chicken lights" and this was the first hit.

Some inspectors take the lights thing way too seriously. We had a service truck fail a commercial vehicle inspection because a light INSIDE a tool cabinet was burned out. I could not believe it.

Take those extra lights off. No problem doing so.

Would I just leave the hole open? Would you happen to know how many I have to leave for it to legal? This is in Texas if it makes a difference.

Haha. Just make sure the ticket issuing officer writes the exact location and light that is inoperative so you don't carry points. A fine might incur, but no points.
If a tool box light find was issued.... I'd just sit down right there. That'd be it for me.
