I have a feeling this is a dumb question but if I can get it answered it would help ME out tremendously. So I'm researching companies that I would like to apply with once I start CDL in mid-august. I live in Raleigh, NC and feel as though I'd like to go with a company that has a terminal in the general vicinity. But does that really matter? I'll give you an example; TMC is from all my research one of the best flatbed companies to start out with, but they have no terminals in NC period. So they claim weekend home time (and no I'm not worried about that as my first choice of benefits), but how would that work especially if maybe they don't have a large presence in NC? On the other hand Maverick has a terminal out of Laurinburg, NC. I would think Maverick would be a better choice based on this one criteria, which could or could not be huge.

In the end, I've researched very good companies that don't seem to have much of a statewide presence beyond delivering to the state, so I've kind of scratched them off of my wish list even though they look attractive via the web, website, word of mouth, Chinatown, etc...

Thanks in advance for bringing my knowledge up to par!!

Having a terminal in your state of residence is a big plus. Having a terminal within a short driving distance is an even bigger plus.

That way, when things like preventative or full maintenance is done on your truck, you can leave it at the terminal and go on home.

Not to mention, a lot of companies want their trucks and trailers parked in secure lots and/or "approved" off-street parking...and NO company would argue about you leaving their equipment on their property.

However: if you have (and can prove you have) secure parking right at your house....there is absolutely nothing better than to get off the road, and be home.

Those are basically the options you yourself can be the only one to know and decide. We don't know your parking situation.

MC has tons of freght that goes through NC. You pick up a load on fri, go home loaded, then deliver monday. You dont need a terminal unless you get in trouble or need service. As a company driver i went to terminals every 40,000 miles...2 or 3 times a year. Service didnt take long. Now i only go when i buy a new truck. Having a terminal near by is really no big deal. Just find a place to park the rig near your house.

Having a terminal in state is really not that important, for me anyway. Freight near the house is. What gets you home and what gets you out is more important than getting your oil change near home
There is a TMC driver in my town. pretty much there every weekend i am. Sometimes loaded, sometimes not

No terminals for Maverick in N VA but one parks here on weekends all the time. TMC has terminals around and don't know much about them.

TMC has plenty of NC freight, in fact, I'm pretty sure they have some kind of dedicated Home depot account.
Besides that, find out where you'd have to go for training, and also find out where you'd have to drop off truck if you decide to leave at some point.
Personally, if it were between TMC or Maverick, I'd choose Maverick but, good luck with whatever you decide

TMC pays slightly more...marvrick drives autos....both good companies...both on very friendly term with each other.

Maverick per miles is about the same most of the time, but when i get a killer load at tmc, the maverick guys hauling the same load still get paid per mile

Definitely not a 'dumb' question John. I've had the same question myself, just hadn't asked yet. The companies that were recommended to you, did you try contacting them directly to see what they say? I'd be curious what their answer is.
