Recently was offered a Dump driving job by a local land scape company. Basically they needed someone that had a class A since they use a Mack Dump too pull there excavators and there current driver is scared of the truck.
I have about 6 months OTR hauling over size loads (houses). But I haven't driven in the last 2 months and like any OTR driving it was mostly interstate. The dump work will be in the citys ( St.Paul/Minny)
Any tips on how too handle this since it is completely new too me.
Basically the trucks I have driven are single axle Sterling day cabs and Volvo Sleepers both with 10 speeds.
I guess I'm just apprehensive.
Dump diffrent then road tractor.

any type of local dump truck is not something to be considered. you'll be looking for work again come winter time. specially for a landscape company.
construction was the hardest hit profession in our recession. and if it ever comes back like it once was. we'll all probably be dead.
the only real construction going on these days is highways. although, big business building seems to have finally picked up.
but, to tell you how to operate a dump truck. would require a book. there is lots to learn.
basically, just make sure you are level when your bed goes up. and look above before raising bed that you don't hit any power lines while your dump is in the air.
if there current driver is scared of the truck. i'd be looking into that first before accepting the job. cuz you probably won't want to be driving that truck either. -
There is a huge difference backing a dump truck with a pintle hooked trailer than backing a '53 ft. trailer with a tractor . It will take some practice .
The comment about no work in winter may not be true if you live in a state that gets a lot of snow and ice . Many contractors equip their trucks with plows and salt shakers . -
More than likely you will not just be driving a truck. Just be willing to get your hands dirty. You will be an employee of a construction company and with that could be added responsibility. It could be a good situation, as long as you take care of your family everything is good, right?
x#1 Thanks this. -
I under stand that Pintle hitchs back differently from 5th. That's what I used while moving modular homes. We didn't have a flat bed or anything. We used dollys that the houses frames sat on.
I live in Minnesota so we have some decent winters. I'm not worried about being unemployed in the winter since the company has a fleet of single axle plow trucks with salters (ok, not so much a fleet, about 7)
If the trucks junk I wont even think about working there. I mean I can deal with little things but if they think I'm going too run something that's flat out dangerous they have another thing coming. But from what I could get out of them at the interview and hiring there current driver isn't a driver. He simply has a cdl and that from what they told me he doesn't like being up so high.
Well I guess I will find out Monday.
Oh yeah. I was hired as a driver and as a excavator trainee. So it wont just be driving. I don't really know how the excavation part ever came about though. lol. -
I think it may be a good deal if you are willing to work and learn. I did end dump work one summer out of St Cloud, and loved it, even though it was a start up company with absolutely HORRIBLE equipment. Daily breakdowns, and I never did get paid, which is the reason I finally quit and went back to OTR.
But while I was there, I earned the respect of the the owners, and the guy who was leasing them. I just couldn't handle waiting 30 days to get paid (I had told them I would need advances, but that went in one ear and out the other, apparently).
15, 16 hour days, but weekends off for the most part, and learning something new. Making decent $$, if I would have been paid, but the owners didn't get paid for 30 days so neither did I.
Anyway, it was a great experience. -
Truck Broke on the first day. The Compressor failed just out of Savage, mn. Older model mack with a v8. Basically I'm
the garbage man and hauler for the land scaping crews. Not bad.
Really like the truck other then its failing on the first day. Cabs a pretty blue with duals and a 10 speed. Basically a old road tractor converted. Got too spend the other 8 hours showing people how too properly fell trees. Lol. -
Man that is about right, sounds like you have the right attitude though.

Wasn't paid this week like I should have been.
I had 4 hours the first week, (3 weeks ago, 7/3) because the current driver had left with out me. Havent been paid for that.
I'm supposed too be paid every Thursday.
Idk.
