Is it unreasonable to assume that an O/O, with one truck, will have a tough time if he's hiring out all of the maintenance and repairs on the truck?

Depends on how much you're bringing in versus how much you're paying out. For me, I've figured out finally that it's best to do all I can myself and keep the money in my pocket. And my truck is paid for now.

I'm in the Detroit area and currently a car hauling biz. Was thinking of getting into the dump biz also. Does anyone know where to look for upcoming bids? Thanks in advance.

I have two dump trucks. Bought a under CDL single axle first and then a tandem. I have a separate business that does oilfield work that keeps me busy about two weeks a month and I run the dump trucks in between to stay busy. We also have a backhoe and skid steer and do things like spreading dirt and gravel. Our primary customers are homeowners, home builders, farmers, etc. We stay as busy as we want to without a lot of advertising. The trucks are owned by my other business and under its general liability policy and the auto insurance for the dump trucks is about 3-4k per year. Registration/ dot fees are close to $1000 per year. I spent about $1500 last month on repairs on the two trucks. $100-$200 a day on fuel is about average. There is money to be made but it definitely is not a get rich quick scheme.

The company I work for does a lot of work for EV Williams. Forget weight....the escavator guys load you to the hilt......and then some. +1 on the Macks......hard on the body, but they get it done.

Probably. My mechanic is good and he charges $90 per hour. We do all our own maintenance and try to fix everything ourselves and if it is over our heads we take it to the mechanic. Often times mechanics are busy and booked up whenever our truck goes in it usually there 4-5 days which are days you aren't using it making money. Needing to go to a mechanic for big things isn't really a problem but you need to be able to fix the small things and do general maintenance yourself or you will be paying the mechanic more than you make.

I wouldn't buy a dump unless I had a lot of contacts to drum up work. Major grading companies, developers, large general contractors. That will be 90% of your work, and you need to know the truck supervisors. They are the ones that handle the requests of the grading superintendents and such.
