Hi all,
I'm new here, but I have some questions. My name is Tony, I'm a dump truck driver up in eastern pa (Allentown) I work for PennDOT in the winters plowing snow, and hauling asphalt for a paving company in the spring and summer. My main rig is a 99' RD 10 wheeler with a 7 speed extended maxitorque.
I'm 20 years old. My original goal was to become a full time employee for PennDOT (the winter program is your foot in the door) I have decided that I don't want to do that.
In 5-6 years I want to buy my own tri axle. Now before everyone goes and says there is no work, there is. There's not many o/o up here. I was just talking to one of the foremans of eastern industries (the biggest supplier of blacktop and stone in eastern pa)
I could get a contract for hauling with them, but he said a lot of the o/o's bitc* about how expensive the liability insurance is. He said you just have the minimum of 1 million dollars to haul for them. But he said you can make a good living.
Does anyone know what kind of cost that liability Insurance is? I got a quote on insurance for a rig ($17k) but that's a newer driver at 20 years old. I'm looking at 26-27 time frame.
I'd prefer a Mack granite for my first truck, preferably an 8 or 10spd with a 400hp engine. I'm impartial to Mack's.
Well any info would be appreciated! Thanks!!
-Tony

if your planning on pulling a tri axle. you might want to reconsider that 400 horses.
i'd also wait till your ready to pull the trigger before thinking about such things. the economy has a tendency to make things change.
anything to do with construction has really slowed down. lots of jobs will never come back. most of the companies have closed there doors. and what's left sold to another.
i was a dump truck driver 10 years. the companies doing work around here. weren't around when i got out of the industry. they've all come from other states becuase they can't find work in there own states. and the companies that WERE here. are gone.
for the last 4 years the majority of construction was mainly highways and roads. building construction is starting to pick up. but housing construction is still dead.jbatmick Thanks this. -

Hey speedy I'm hearing a 13 speed with 3.90 rears is the way To go

I agree with everything snowwy said...if you want to plan that far ahead, plan to hook up with someone that has (or can obtain) a WBE/MBE they get priority on government jobs
-
since I also work for the government maybe I can get some tips on that from them . -
Women Business Enterprise
Minority Business Enterprise
government projects like to shoot for 10% WBE/MBE participation....that helps in the bidding process, and gives you a leg up... -
-
Hence "hook up with somebody that has (or can obtain)"
you can be married by then...your wife can obtain a WBE....OR lease on to a company that has the certifications you will likely stay busy -
