To be quite honest the thought had never even crossed my mind to look into unemployment benefits. At any rate, 1099 is still fine for me and I'd still take it over W2.

Let's talk per diem for a min. As a W2 worker, are you able to claim per diem to minimize your taxable income? I get an allowance of $65 per day (I read that for the year 2023 it will be $69 per day) that I'm away from home. Let's say I work 240 days out of the year. That alone shrinks my taxable income by $15,600. What's not to like about that?

Did I buy a new GPS? Itemize that as a business expense. New phone + monthly phone bill? Business expense. Work clothes, gloves, tools? Business expense. Etc. You can see how this can add up quick and reduce my overall taxable income.

To each their own. I'm sure both 1099 and W2 might have their +/-'s. I'm not here to berate anyone for choosing whichever one or tell them they're wrong but I do think 1099 gets a little too much hate and is possibly even misunderstood. I certainly believe 1099 is not the complete nightmare it's sometimes made out to be.

I was paid 14,042.10 cents last year of per diem as a w2 company driver. You can be paid per diem as a company driver, you just can’t claim it on your own.

My employer will reimburse allowances for business expenses. Headset broke? Go get one, turn in the receipt, and get a $50 check, tax-free. Need that cell phone to contact dispatch? All drivers get a $25/mo tax-free check to partially reimburse for that bill.

Direct reimbursement, even partial, is always better than a deduction, as its dollar-for-dollar and not marginal percentage.
That, too. And many 1099-ers are mistaken in thinking they can deduct their grocery bills and personal truck expenses for this... if taking per-diem, they cannot deduct a single cent for food, as that's covered. If they are taking the home office expense, they cannot deduct a single personal vehicle expense, as they claimed their home base as their office, therefore that's where the truck should reside as well.

Watch out for these new agents, they need something to do, and the 1099 misclassifications are ripe for the picking.

I'm happy with 1099 and have been doing just fine with it, no problems at all. If W2 is the correct path for you, suit yourself?

1099 has worked fantastic for me so I'll keep on keeping on with it. I found some terrific European 1099 companies that have paid the top salaries in the nation and have pulled some strong numbers, with fantastic home time flexibility. Does that make you envious? It seems you just won't rest until you crucify 1099, LOL

Why go around trying to shove W-2 down everyone's throat teaching it's the way, the truth, and the life? Please, keep it to yourself. You Americans already try to cram democracy down the throats of other nations, now you will do the same with your w-2? Democracy doesn't work everywhere. Neither does your w-2. I'm happy with 1099. Keep your w2

I'm merely defending tonight and saying - look, it has worked well for me and I'm happy with it. You on the other hand, it seem like you're out to squash it and spread your W-2 because you think it's the only right way

If you're happy with your 1099 you can keep your 1099.
BTW Why don't you let us in on your awesome employer?

I am indeed enjoying my 1099. Why are you guys, on the other hand, seem like you're out on a witch hunt against 1099?
