So I just heard that even though I have a 95' truck, that all drivers of older trucks will be mandated to run e-logs thru a smart phone? True or not? Thanks folks.

Not in anything I've read. The device has to be able to record engine hours, location etc.
Who knows what they'll come up with between now and December 17

Not smart phone, the elogs will plug into the data port on the driver side in cad. Same place they plug into truck to look for fault codes. Then the elogs have GPS so that how they get location. The elogs can tell truck is moving from the data port because I can see the miles and throttle position and the GPS. Cell phone log books are to simple to rewrite or maked up. So plugging into the engine and adding GPS will be kinda hard to hide or make up. Then you add the elogs send the data to another computer during the day. That make them difficult to change. Elogs today aslo show when they are changed.

Last time I heard it was like 1990 and older trucks was the cut off but then I heard that was changed because they could read the data. If you have mechanical engine no computer then your safe but not sure how far back they can go now

It's 2000 model year or newer. As of now, if and when the regulation becomes fully in place, you would not need to have it even on an electrically controlled truck, model year 1999 or older.

heres and overview of the rules from overdrive. Since a couple of guys got it WAY wrong. Figured id at least help get it right. As of now you can use phone/tablet based Elog, but once the rule goes in effect you are supposed to have one that plugs into the ECM of the truck. Heres to hoping OOIDA is successful in their lawsuit

It will be interesting to see what impact ELDs will have on trucking. Seeing how many people are still running over their HOS. Lots of people are already running them so many by late 2017it won't be a big deal.

There is, Ive been using one for several months. Its called Keep Trucking. There is another popular one called Big Road. And a popular one from JJ Keller. All serve the purpose of elogs, however Once the mandate goes in effect they dont meet it due to none of these hooking up to the ECM on the trucks
