"No regulation that will require any rental truck to have an installed ELD."
Not yet. But come December you will have to have one. The company we use is working on temporary solutions for use in rental trucks.
"You as the driver have to know the rules and regulations."
I'm continually amazed at how many know so little about the rules of their profession.
e-logs and switching to a rental unit without them

The issue I see with rentals is they may have one system installed, but how are you going to get your information once the truck is turned back in... then the hassle of a driver having to learn a new system for only a day or two... I don't see rentals (short term) installing any ELD's.

Temporary solutions plug in through the diagnostic port. In our case, it will be the same exact system our driver is used to and you capture all required data while it's plugged in.BUMBACLADWAR Thanks this.

I agree with that. There is no perfect answer I guess.

I agree that the short term rental thing will be a hassle. And I have not committed to memory the entire body of regulations. I can also see how some companies would use this as a huge LOOPHOLE. Have a tight run to do? Oh, just take one of the Penske tractors out back instead of your regular tractor and go on paper logs.
You are going to have some 'splaining to do to Mr enforcement if you don't have the required ELD, Anybody want to go blind looking it up.. be my guest..lol -
Trucks break down alot, some more than others, but being in a loaner isn't all that unusual.
Forced standardisation may be a way to address this, but other loopholes are there. More hoops to jump through, imo. Stories abound of e-log users finding that they like paper.
I'm sitting near a place that does Qcomm installs and repairs, the people running that said it's smart to avoid as long as possible.
They repair refrigeration, mostly, so loaded perishables get preference. Some companies route for repair before proceeding, and usually before loading, so you end up being late or not having a load, because nanny box blew,a fuse? -
Looks like it will be a combination of portable ELDs going with the drivers, and some rental fleets having pre-installed ELDs, but there is no loophole for rental truck instead of company trucks.

Our trucks get taken for weeks at a time for dpf maintenance and pm's.We have 2 options for elog.1 take your receiverbox with gray cord and plug it into the connector inside in front of drivers door and have the office add your rental truck to the list. This way you can push (pretrip new tractor, then select from list).if the "grey box doesnt fit your obd2 or ob1konobee connector or what have you, then option 2: Have the office add your new tractor# to the fleet list and run your elog(except its manual). They wont be able to monitor your speed, location, etc.Everytime you stop push on duty, when you leave push drive, sometimes itll ask you for location(like when you go on break) Punch in city.Screen will remain Yellow, but the log will work.Doing this right now in a rental. The required thing is to get the office to add in tractor # on their computer. Then youll have all your old logs available.scottied67 and 25(2)+2 Thank this.
