If you run with a 48 state carrier you most likely will never see close to home till your home time. It is just how it works. I worked for Melton, they are a good company, and their biggest freight base is in South Texas. The only time I saw south Texas is when I was going to or coming from home.
If you want to be home more then every 3 weeks pick a company that has a regional. If you do not need to be home every weekend or every other weekend pick a 48 state carrier. As long as you do not go with a bottom of the barrel company your pay will be close no matter which company you choose.

I dont really need any home time, just dont want to get stuck in the northeast unless the pay is significantly better.
So the difference in pay between say Crete (no new mexican rookies allowed even if we move) and say Knight or Swift will be pretty similar? -
as a new driver, stay west...good running and learning environment. The east coast in general is no fun, but many run it and do just fine. Get some time and go from there.

I would stick to the Crete's, Schnieder, Melton. -
ABF is hiring for Kingman, AZ. Drive overnight to LA area then take 10 hour break in LA during the day. That evening return to Kingman, AZ.

I have been talking with a rep from Decker out of Missoula. She recommends getting with a small owner/operator that you might know or have connections with to get 6 months to a year of training so you can then go to the company you want without getting tied in with some of the more shiesty companies that us greenhorns are forced to work with to earn our stripes.
Are there any great outfits in the Rockies for a rookie to get with??!! I am also willing to relocate.
Thanks! -
ABF is union ltl right?
I think they are the same union in new mexico that does film production hauling.
Really hard to get into that stuff.
I wonder if you could slide over from ABF after a few years.. -
I'd rather run the west any day. It's a whole lot less stressful.
