looking buy a new scale truck, I am looking at the international workstar 7300 with the dt 9l 330hp motor, but i am also looking at the eaton autoshift 10 speed or the allison auto. As much as I love shifting gears we wear clutches out shockingly fast with the constant foward and reversing. I have NO expirance with any form of auto tranny in a semi so I am in dire need of advice.

Darn it, I came to this thread to make snide comments about newbie drivers whut can't handle somethin' as simple as shifting gears! Then I read the post, and realize it's an actual legitimate issue. Rats! Well, since I've only driven one auto-shift, and wasn't impressed with it, I guess I ain't gonna be no help to you no how. Sorry driver, hope somebody kicks up for ya!

If you are local, get the Allison. But get the most heavy duty they offer for your size engine. You still have a clutch with the Eaton, and it slips a little when starting off.
Dumpster and local trash trucks use the Allison for a reason. -
IMO. Autoshift lets get better fuel milage. Alisson is like a car tranny, but big. It is a good choise for bus (smooth ride), but for long trip truck.. Autoshift is better.
Anyway both the transmissions have some weak points. Eaton is more reliable, but shifting motors, wiring issues... and autoshift is with clutch like a manual transmission -
Have a friend who's family owns a gravel pit, I think just about all their newer dump trucks all have Allisons and they love them. For constant stop and go you can't beat an actual automatic, IMO the autoshift would be a maintaince nightmare.
I just recommend you take whatever series Allison the dealer recommends and go one series larger. Also remember they're pretty power hungry so the more HP the better or it will be a gutless wonder. -
I drow LIAZ Bus with Cat 3126 and 5st allison and 7 ton ZIL truck with alisson. For driver it is a good transmission, especially driving in snow, but comparing with manual tranny with the same engine, fuel milage is 10% down. But I drow in urban area and I cant say something about highway

The original poster wanted to get away from the wear on the clutch, the only thing that does that is a torque converter in a fully automatic transmission. You'd be better off in a manual than with an Eaton or any other auto-shift, IMO. Just because it doesn't have a pedal doesn't mean it doesn't have a clutch.
Torque converters were used on some very large and heavy equipment, like dozers and tanks. -
Alisson transmisions used on buses and trucks are with torque converter, like a car transmission. Bus, I drow, is with T280R (torqmatic series) transmission. It is 6st full auto tranny with locking torque converter. To drive bus with this tranny is like to drive soccer mom's minivan.

I have 950,000 miles on my autoshift without any problems other than changing out the clutch at 700,000 miles.
the only issues that can come up is throwing it in neutral at speed [so no georgia overdrive] or shutting down with the tranny in gear.
the fix is to disconnect the battery for a minute or two to reset the computer.
performance is the same or better as a manual ten speed tranny as it IS a ten speed tranny that tends to shift faster and at the proper points for conditions.
in mine i have a clutch pedal and if I go down to manual mode I can not only skip gears but can get up to speed MUCH faster but sacrifice fuel mileage doing it.
I can also downshift on a downgrade without worrying about missing a gear.
people put down the autoshift, I did until I bought this truck but for the life of me I have not found ANY downside to it and a lot on the upside going for it.
the fact that I am not constantly clutching and shifting make for a much easier day,in heavy traffic I can put it in the hold position and choose the proper gear to go with the flow, and while the clutch does wear it wears t a much slower rate as the computer engages and disengages it at the proper time,EVERY time so it wears at a MUCH slower rate.
