It looks odd, but one of those Ls is the normal low gear in that transmission, then the two smaller ones would be the double lows that are from the deep reduction part of the transmission. I have seen both shift patterns for 8LL, do you know if that is the original transmission in that truck?

@smokincat, yes it is the original Trans. 527,132mi as of yesterday. My company is the second owner of the truck and it was built to spec for the first owner.

The 8LL in the ford is nice and tight versus the 8L ( no deep reduction ) in the 03' sterling tractor I also drive. It feels like a five gallon bucket of gears on the floor that I have to search for the right gear and insert every time. New guy taking my Ford with the 3406 and 8LL on Monday. Sad day it will be. But we are dropping our share of gravel this week and enjoying it. :biggrin_255:

I have never driven an 8LL but looking at that shift pattern, it looks like an 8LL is basically a 15 with only one deep reduction gear instead of 5?

Rank I think they did it because 15 sounds more impressive than 10 LL

A 15 has 15 gears but only 11 sequentially higher ratios (shifts like an 11). If my tired eyes are reading that picture correctly, it looks like the 8LL shifts like a 9 speed so I guess they aren't quite the same.

I have gave false advertisement a bunch. I have told folks 15 and 8LL is the the same LOL. But the 15 does have a closer spread and does sound more impressive

If you go look, the 8LL is actually in the 13sp style case. I was poking around on something on Roadranger a while ago and noticed they used a shared manual. Wasn't expecting that, but sure enough, that's what they are.
