I'd take a peak under the hood and lay under the truck before you let the mechanic do whatever he pleases. It could be something simple enough that you can fix it yourself. I'd check the linkage ends and any springs before I'd give him free reign.

Incorrect the rebuilding of transmission is the labor intensive part if you mechanic is skilled enough to do it .. I’d say over 90% of shops farm out the job to a transmission rebuilder . PS your expensive rebuild might consist of a pressure wash and spray paint job lol

If you say so. So the initial diagnosis is the linkage. The parts have been ordered. I will keep you guys posted...

So the work was finally completed. It was the linkage. He charged me $188.25 for the parts and 2 hours of labor at $125 per hour. The total was $438.25. I guess I can't complain because I was fearing the worst. I'm pretty sure that it was less than a 2-hour job, but at least I wasn't reamed. As someone else pointed out on here, "it's not the amount of time that it took them to do the job, it's the amount of time it took them to LEARN the job." And I have nothing against people making a little extra as long as they aren't abusive. I tried to tip the guy who did the work $20 and he wouldn't accept it. He said my satisfaction was enough. I told the owner about this and he said that a "smile and a genuine thank you" was all they needed.

Thank you guys for all of your input and insight. This forum truly is a "trough of knowledge".

Sheesh. Sounds like a fine deal. If he wouldn’t have freaked you about the 8 hour estimate at first all would have been well.

Well, the 8-hour estimate was if he had to pull the tranny. Which I guess is fair unto itself. Or maybe not? What's the normal hours charged to pull a tranny and reinstall?

Depends on the truck, some are easier than others. Straight clutch replacement with resurfaced flywheel only would usually fall in the 8-12 hour range typically. Guys who do a lot of clutches are usually pretty quick compared to guys who only do one now and then.

When the trans is out, do the rear engine mounts. Easy when it's out....
Ok, read the rest, never mind! Lol
