Newbie to your site- hello all.

I have a 1988 Int. Paystar 5000 tandem dump, ex municipal truck heavy specs. Bolt on the bottom of the rear rear came out and lost all fluid, rear got hot. I replaced the bolt tightened everything, refilled gear oil and hoped for the best, did not go so well. The rear was shot, went to pull the axles one came right out and the other came out about 1" and that was it. I have put a 15 ton puller on it, hooked it to my excavator and tied it off to the my dozer and that axle won't come out. I am guessing that a gear or bearing has seized on the shaft and will not allow it to come out. Anybody have a problem like this, looking for any suggestions beyond getting a different truck.

We usually take a long rod and stick through the other axle hole and beat it out from the other side of truck. Just make sure no one is watching the axle on the other side. Back in the 60s my dad knew a guy that did that and it knocked him out.

    Oxbow and swaan Thank this.

thanks for the help I took your advise and got a BFH and went to town on the axle. I had to buy a 2" x 5' solid steel rod put it through the other side and with my excavator hooked to the axle beat on that shaft for about an hour and it was out. It was badly damaged where it was hanging up on the end of the spline where it passed through the sun gear slider. So now that it is out I am looking for a used rear Eaton RP461. The ring and pinion were ok, other than having gotten hot, but the internals of the planetary were shot. thanks again.

the gear that contacts the spider gears slide fine, it was hung up on damage to the sun gear slider, this was only used on this two speed rear, and it was set up to be locked in low. not sure why that was put on a tandem but apparently it was somewhat common on the heavy spec trucks.
