After talking to quite a few people who have worked on one of these auto shifts and the man doing mine this is what I have learned.
1. Service writers say if you have over 800,000 replace the whole thing ! It will save a whole bunch of shop hours.
2. The data wires in the harness are twisted around each other with a measured amount of twist per inch ( don't change this ) it matters
3. Replace ALL of the 4 sensor's their the cheapest part of the job.
4. If your ABS module is going bad it will rob data from ECM. Unplug module and if code goes away spend $ 500.00 for a new ABS module and be happy you got off cheap.
5. Make sure the wheel on output shaft that the speed sensor reads off of is clean. Have to pull yoke off to see. While your at it check torque on yoke and rear end nuts.
6. If you replace the shift motors the price between rebuilt and new is huge but now is not the time to cut corners. New is almost double the cost. One would think that taking off of old motors and putting on the new would be simple ( It is ) but the new motors must be married to the computer or they will not be recognized by the ECM. You must flash the ECM and reprogram them. If you don't ... when you start it up and put in gear it will not move.....
7. All of these parts can be changed out without to much trouble, done through the floor plate.
8. You could put a whole new manual trans in and be pretty close to the amount it would have cost just to replace what was already in their. 14,000 for trans then shifter, tower, floor plate, clutch, throw out bearing re flash ECM and remove wiring vs 16,000 for what was already in their.
9. If you do not have easy access to a lap top with the diagnostic software and the program to reprogram the ECM your dead in the water.
10. Get everything you need to do done so you can run the wheels off the truck to pay for it.
Any one who has Auto shift problems feel free to PM me and I will be happy to share what I have learned !!DudleyBoyNC and 04 LowMax Thank this. -
I have an 01 Freightliner with a 3 pedal. The problem I have is it will not shift on it's own. I see the up arrows come on and it beeps but will not shift. Of I let off the throttle I feel it shift into gear. I have the same problem with down shifting I have to rev it up the it will down shift. It like motor and trans are not communicating. Anyone seen this.

Check and clean all of the trucks grounds.
If you got a whole bunch of miles its time to change the sensors anyway. -
