I am doing a truck activity study and I am interested in downloading summary information such as fuel use, miles traveled, speed distributions and similar data from Detroit Diesel, Cummins and Caterpillar engines from a broad range of model years.

What is the minimum software and hardware I need to do this? I believe I need Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link, INSITE and Caterpillar Electronic Technician software, but am not sure which versions. Do the latest versions handle all model years or do I need several versions of the software? Can I get away with the basic versions?

Is any of the hardware (cables, connectors, interfaces, etc..) the same between the three sets of software or do I have to buy these seperate for each manufacturer?

Also, if I am only interested in summary data, can I avoid the license requirement for any of the sotware?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to buy anything uneccessary since this stuff is so expensive.

    Thanks.

That would be someones personal information (truck use/acyivities) you are wanting to try to tap into.I hate to think where this information could end up.More bad exposeure for those not so earth friendly diesel trucks?

You do need special cables to use these programs. Insight costs a lot more than what I think you might be willing to spend. Then you have the problem on the trucks if you have a 7 pin or 9 pin connector. You do need a license for these products and the usually only last for a year.

I'd go for one of the aftermarket readers that does all makes, buying genuine readers from all the manufactures will cost a fortune.

Go to your local dealership, buy the guys pizza or a round of coffee and they will give you all the info you need.

To get the hardware and software your self is very expensive due to all the different manufactures having their own proprietary software and in cases like Insite, hardware too. Dealership level you are looking at over $10000 per year just for software and hardware. I know you can find the old Prolinks but the cartriges are still $500 - $3000 each. Cummins makes a little PDA style "reader" for $700 to view parameters and trip results. The whole thing is too expensive to get into for just a study. Spend $30 on the pizza!
