The local nursery that i have done work with still has their drivers filling out a paper log to go along with the eld. They are instructed not to turn the eld on until they break the 150mi limit tho. Also they have been told to flag the 150mi mark on their paper logs to avoid any confusion.

Think of your Tractor as a Desktop Computer. A Mobile Device (i.e. smartphone, tablet, etc.) is a Honda Civic.
add 5K lbs of bricks and your Tractor doesn't blink... But, the Civic rips in half.
Mobile devices aren't nearly as "powerful" as advertised. That's why "mobile versions" of sites/apps exist. They're watered-down versions of the real thing.
It's really easy to overload those. Which will cause them to slow down or crash. -
Nothing wrong with that at all. But, there is a bit of a learning curve, when it comes to ELDs. If you're not using it everyday, you're bound to miss something. Also, If you're pairing and un-pairing the mobile device (since bluetooth is crappy technology) you're just leaving the door open for more hiccups (which of course), will lead to more "User Frustration(s)."

Agreed, but these guys are told not to even turn their tablets on. Inother words bring it with you, but leave it in the glove box. The good thing for them is the Company trucks only break the 150mi a couple times a month, if that. They give the longer runs to the o/o’s like myself. I’m trying to get all this figured out know, i think i may reactivate my #’s and dump LS.Bank_Lbr Thanks this.

Ok, here is a trip with a load of agriculture products. From point A to point B it is 800 miles. You do not log in until you reach the 150 air miles radius, but the ELD is recording. The ELD will put you in violation before point B, now taking the exemption, the driver can make the 800 miles, but the ELD will show the violation. Care to clarify this for a dumb old man??

You will still have the Full 11 Hours of Drive Time available, once you reach the 150-mark. That part, will not be compromised (while using the exemption). But, you will have "drained a couple hours" from your 14 (or 16) hour shift.

Not according to a retired Federal DOT officer. He was on Dave Nemo show discussing this very thing and according to him, those hours used in the 150 miles are like they never happened. According to him, once a driver reaches the 150 mile radius, he still has 14/11.

As long as you are running the exemption, Yes. You are right. Pre-150 is "in addition to" the 14/11. My mistake.

Under the MAP-21 exemption, all hours worked within the 150 (nautical) mile radius are EXEMPT from the HOS regulations. So driving empty to the pickup, waiting to load, loading, and driving loaded to the 150 mile point are ALL fully exempt from HOS regulations, and should be logged as OFF DUTY.
In other words, your 70/14/11/8 hr clocks do not start until you cross beyond the 150 mile point. In practical terms, that means logging out of the ELD until you hit the line. When you cross the line, make a notation that the previous driving, loading and waiting times fall under the MAP-21 HOS exemption.
We just had a truck go through another level one last Friday, and even Oregon DOT agreed with logging it this way; clean inspection. -
