Yes they do. We evolved as omnivores and have been eating animal protein as part of our diets for the last 50,000-100,000 years.

I guess if you don't want to believe me when I say that we can live without meat, you can ask a doctor the next time you see one. I actually think you should ask several.

Me, I've been vegetarian (no animal meat of any kind, no poultry, no sea food, no eggs) since 1980. I do drink milk and eat dairy products and I don't feel weak, I have much more energy than folks my same age. I also don't eat white sugar, refined sugar, processed foods and don't drink sodas since 1980 as well. I don't get sick, haven't had a flu or infections in years...
No idea how I would feel or how strong or how much energy I would have if I had been eating meat for all those years... but I don't intend to change my diet now cause I like the way I feel... Just saying...Last edited: Mar 26, 2018

Vegetarians also have a very hard time maintaining muscle mass because they are getting proteins from animal products. The fundamental chemistry of proteins from animal and plant sources are different, and human being require both to have a balanced, healthy life. It's in our biology. Now, plenty of people have had success with vegetarianism, but it's not the natural order of things, and you are forcing your body to survive without something it does need.
@loudtom asserted that "Humans don't need to eat meat to get the required nutrients and amino acids." This is completely false. People can live without them, yes, but they are missing part of their diet as our biology dictates. -
Livestock hauling tips from the new breed.....how nice
Most of you should be driving an office desk instead of a big truck..shogun Thanks this. -
First off, I believe you're wrong. Several people who are in the medical and nutritional fields share my opinion. Several athletes do well as vegans. The only weightlifter to qualify for the 2016 Olympics was vegan. The only thing it requires is knowing what you're eating(which people probably should anyway), and having access to those foods(there are supermarkets almost everywhere in the modern world).
Secondly, where do you draw the line on what the body needs vs just missing stuff? You could just as easily say that humans can't live without beer, chocolate, or ice cream with this logic. This question is already irrelevant, though, considering that a proper plant based diet isn't missing anything. -
A balanced diet across all food groups (not so much simple carbohydrates) is necessary to be considered a "healthy" diet. There are a lot of people out there claiming that vegetarianism is universally "healthier" for everyone, but it isn't. Some people do well on that kind of diet, some don't, and human biology doesn't lie, we are omnivores, not herbivores.
EDIT: Also, I shouldn't have to say this, but citing a source from a pro-vegetarian website does your point no favours. You have to go either to original medical studies or the accredited institutions that do them. If a vegetarian lifestyle were universally healthier than eating animal products, don't you think all the major universities that deal in diet science be screaming it from the rooftops and everyone would be switching over immediately?
Like with everything diet-related, it's hard to find the facts amongst the sea of fads.spyder7723 Thanks this. -
@wore out
Hey Russ, did I ever tell you about the time a Holstein bull tried to pulverize me at a auction in Michigan ?!?
When I walked up to his pen to see what I had, he spun around and shook his head at me...I thought “oh good we got us a problem child here” and he sure was..
When me and the pen hand tried to walk him up the aisle and up the chute he went bi polar on us...It took a good while to get that SOB on the trailer the dang thing just went crazy on us...He was big boy with a really bad attitude.
I got nothing but respect for that kid at the auction that works the pens he needs a wheel barrow to carry his balls around...He took chances I never would have to get that bull on the trailer.
Anyway, that bulls last ride was to Wyalusing (Cargill) and good riddance.
you guys still moving that stock around the clock have my full respect. -
