From my vintage J.I Case tractor shop manual circa 1951. And still stands true today no matter how much electronics are used….

These days something like that would read, "you're too low IQ to make safe decisions so a machine will make your choices for you."

Why the hell should I have to pay for the ELD service when I don't own the company, the truck, the tablet, or the site license / subscription for the ELD software? If I'm going to have to pay for my logs, like in the old days, then I'm going back to loose-leaf paper, like in the old days.

And what good is the ELD if the company can't see it? You do realize that they are required by federal regulations to keep logs for 6 months, right?

Makes one miss the good ole days.

Hos was easier and simpler. Didn't require a machine. Companies couldn't screw with you. You could drive and sleep as desired.

    The system lasted 75 years.

The safest system of all times too.
You made HOS work for you not the opposite way.

I don't know I have ran paper and elog, and under paper rules I had a Fargo route that started at 2am on my way up to Fargo I would see a truck rolled over at least once a month, had an asleep driver cut across the median and roll over right in front of me once too, that was in like 98. I don't think it is any safer these days, now I just see drivers doing stupid #### that they shouldn't even be attempting, and end up hitting stuff and getting in accidents, but I see less rollovers from the cowboys that think they can drive for 20 hours straight. I feel in alot of ways it is less safe out there today, most of that has to do with horrible training programs, that roll people through with no idea how to actually drive a truck on the road. I feel like we would still be on paper if people did not absolutely abuse it and drive until their eyeballs were about to glue themselves shut. SO it kind of forced heavier regulation. I run an elog just for sake of it making everything easier, but there is alot of times when I want to unhook the system and throw it out of the truck.

Running on paper logs was more about personal responsibility. That also meant working for a company that would not make you do crazy things. You could schedule your trip that you had a day for running and night for sleeping. With ELDs, there's more driving at the time when you don't feel like driving at all. More racing with time too. More legal but not safer at all, if you ask me
