So did I read wrong or are crashes INCREASING?
-
Compare the # of truck before & after ELDs & crashes before & after ELDs.
If truck numbers increased 30%, or whatever that number is, and crashes increased less than 30% it may indicate an improvement of safety. Then there is the comparison by miles driven before & after ELDs. -
The number of truck crashes per 100,000 miles traveled has been increasing ever since the ELD mandate went into effect.Bean Jr. Thanks this.

How many are directly related to the ELD and not due to poor training of younger/new drivers? Or foreign drivers?TurkeyCreekJackJohnson and kemosabi49 Thank this.

Well. I don't know how anyone can drive 11 hours without getting tired. Specially in a job that changes hours everyday.

They were selling the ELD mandate as a safety improvement, not as a modernization device. There's no clear evidence it helped safety at all. I doubt that FMCSA would accept or let alone fund any studies showing adverse effects of ELDS; running with fudged paper logs was safer than running legal. ELDs may provide a good fleet management tool, enabling tracking, IFTA reporting, and driver behavior but that's not something every small carrier or owner operator needs to spend money for.
-
You don't need FMCSA approval to look at state and federal stats on crashes.
-
They were the facilitators and should conduct the proper studies. Showing the raw number of crashes before and after does not give the full answer of how ELDs were worth implementing as a mandate. As a matter of fact, they owe us that. They mandated the ELDs and I had to spend money.Last edited: Aug 19, 2024
