Whether we say ELDs or HOS, everybody is complaining about current HOS, it goes without saying. When someone is trying to circumvent 14 hour rule, it has nothing to do with being dishonest - this brings too much of a negative connotation, on par with a being Wall Street swindler or a thief or something similar.

The hos is not the issue.

With paper, we have legal flexibility. If you got pulled over for any reason, and the officer notices you're 2 minutes over on your log, and there is a truck stop 1 mile away that you were going to park at, would any leo have an issue with that?? Probably not, but the ELog will. The Leo can choose not to punish you. The ELog will and has no choice.

I ran 640 miles yesterday and was empty the day before. Spent just over an hour at the shipper. Used my whole 14.

Normally people would just edit long loading or unloading times right out of the picture. Gain an extra 4 hours. Not anymore. Going to cause at least 25% productivity for many. Even more for the ones who like to run 1,000 miles in a day. Which is stupid anyway. I'll be glad to see that stop, but still need some flexibility.

Having to make the decision to park now, or park 2 hours away, and maybe not make it two hours away without going over, and there's no truck stop in between that you're gonna find parking at.

This 5% productivity drop is BS. Gonna be more than that. Especially on the reefer side with all those multi stops. There may end up being food shortages. As long as the food shortages are in DC, I don't care. I quote $20 trillion to go anywhere near DC. Iol.

If a driver stops 2 hours early vs taking a chance of no parking and out of hour. That drive can now get up 2 hours early to start driving. So the load can still be on time.

Long loading and unloading may go away because now the driver is not going to be expected to makeup for that time. If they can't load on time, we can't deliver on time. It puts the pressure back on to the shipper

I been talking to folks where I load, and those where I deliver about our HOS, and how the drag @$&ing effects us. I might as well talk to a pumpkin! Just the other night I was to load 5 coils going to Elkhart. Was told to be there at 7:00pm, at 9:39pm I crossed their scales with 4 coils because the 5th one wasn't ready. I was told it was a mechanical failure that caused the problem. It very well may have been to I don't know. But I'm sure it will always be a machines fault, and no one is really going to give 2 hoots about a truck driver with an appointment time on the other end. ELD or paper, it will be the same! I get a copy of my scale ticket every time I load, it's their ticket and it has my arrival time and departure time on it for all to see. If I already have proof of my arrival and departure times how is Elog going to help? Simply asking.

Elog can or could help by them pay you detention pay for their machine breaking and you load not being ready. If it's a one time deal then it not a big deal. Stuff happens. If it a regular thing no trucking company can afford it sit all day for free because a drive can't makeup for that time on Elog. So the trucking company will be forced to charge detention pay or go out of business or get more money per mile to cover the long loading and unloading time.

A trucking company can't afford to sit at the docks all day with the Elog going. Then the shipper say ok you loaded you can go. Now the driver will be out of hour and have to go park for 10 hours. They will have to load the truck faster or pay detention or more per mile to makeup for detention or pay for team drivers or load trucks in a reasonable time.

If they can't load the truck on time, we can't deliver on time.

Look at Walmart, they are going to charge the shipper for loads that are late. So the shipper will have lots of incentives to load trucks going to Walmart DC on time. If not they have to pay. The Elog will prove the driver and trucking company was their waiting to get loaded for 6 hour or something.

I can fax them a copy of their own scale ticket too with the time I arrived, and time I left. But it won't change anything.
I truly hope Elogs does help. Something in my gut tells me it's going yo be more of a Trojan horse than anything. Time will tell that's for sure. Until then let's be steering and gearing, and be safe at our our jobs.
