Ok I've been reading a lot of articles of people complaining about the elog mandate. With every story I read about I wonder more and more...did anyone ever follow the Hours of Service laws before now?? Here is an example..."The 47-year-old college graduate has been a long-haul truck driver since 1995. He used to set his own schedule during his nearly 100-hour workweeks: He'd drive for eight hours, take a nap for four to six hours as the receiving company slowly unloaded his truck, and then drive for another five hours or so before getting a proper sleep." First observation, the law only allows fir a 70 hour workweek. Second he would drive for 13 hours but the law only allows 11. Now say he starts at 5 am drives for 8 hours stops at 1pm breaks for 4 hrs thats 5pm then drives another 5 hrs stopping at 10pm then only gets 7 hrs MAX of sleep assuming he goes straight to sleep when he stops which he wont. So maybe he only gets 4 or 5 hours of rest before doing it all over again. Not only is this illegal but #### its unsafe no wonder rigs are always running off the road. So again my question for everyone here is...Did anyone ever follow the law before the mandate???

1. That sounds like a past tense situation and he is stating that is how he USE to run.
2. These mandates change a LOT.
3. I hear a lot of like and dislike for the mandate.
I know plenty of people who have always ran according to regulation and I have known people who did not. My preference, not judge how other people's bodies work. Never have I been able to work 3rd shift, I'm not designed that way. My friend PREFERS 3rd shift and only sleeps for 3-4 hours at a time, usually twice a day. Just like everything else in the world, it works for some and not for others.Bank_Lbr Thanks this. -
Rigs running off the road are because dispatch chew your ### if you don't drive when the eld says you can. Some drivers can't sleep at the drop of a hat. And most of the stress from trucking has to do with the regulations, not the driving. Even the eld does not know if you slept or not while in sleeper birth. I would also like to ask @Davidduhon1 How well do you sleep when being load or unloaded for 8 hours of rocking in the trailer?

All he did was continue to run as he was accustomed, and made it "look good on paper". If those old HOS regs are so "unsafe" and the new ones so much better, how come replaceable commodities (freight) are held to the new HOS, while irreplaceable commodities (people) still play by those old rules? The answer is obvious. Like pretty much everything the government does, it wasn't about safety, but rather control and revenue enhancement.Flipcity_otr, xsetra, CorsairFanboy and 4 others Thank this. -
Well I guess my experience is limited on this. Thanks for the input. Im just thinking near term with the use of qualcomm you already had to follow this or have a violation. I did not see how this new mandate changed anything about how you work now and before with the same HOS law. Im stull nno understanding hiw this is effecting parking as well. Even before the eld you still had to stop. The eld does not tell everyone to stop at the same time. You still work the same amount of time and when youre out of time you stop. Its up to the driver whether thats 6pm or 2am.

It is required to hold truck drivers to these rules, however, we allow ambulance drivers and other emergency vehicle drivers to work ridiculous hours without any regards to the amount of rest they have had. Same goes for those driving bus.
There are legitimate concerns with the regulations. None of the people making the changes have ever driven CMV's and have no plans to do so. From what I have read and heard, that is a lot of the concern.
I do not drive and probably never will. I work with drivers and am in charge of compliance. They are very open and honest with me about everything. Taking a few minutes to listen to the real issues they face can provide you with a lot of knowledge and understanding. -
There's already elevenity hundred threads on the subject here on ttr., lol -
They are allowing wiggle room to find parking ..up two two hours I believe. There is exemptions that if youve planned poorly or ad unforseen event holds you up. When I was otr never did ever have a problem with hours parking or any of the other complaints. They are slowly changing some of the rigidity of the regs and I think it will get better but my whole thing is just why is everyone freaking out when its the exact same regs we've been having to follow.
