I work for a company that specializes in entertainment production, concerts and special events. We are looking in to moving away from paper logs and using and ELD system but are battling with the potential issue of HOS violations. Mostly due to the fact that our technicians are also our drivers, and an average day in the production world is typically longer than a 10 to 14 hour day. Is there anyone in this forum that might also be in the production industry that could help me with some of my questions? Thanks.

How have y'all been staying compliant so far?
gentleroger Thanks this. -
The best thing to do is hire drivers at a contracted rate that allows them to wait, there are no entertainment exceptions to the HOS, never were and never will be, a driver can't work at being a tech for compensation then drive and be within the HOS regs unless there is a 10-hour reset and many times that's impossible.
From your description, it sounds like you guys have been cheating with paper logs and do not understand that every hour worked counts directly against the 14-hour clock.
My truck haul for concerts and movies, the trucks and drivers are exclusive to these accounts and do not have dual roles like production or setup/takedown work. These companies can absorb the added costs because of the overall liability involved with an accident if the driver(s) have dual roles. If they question the added costs of the drivers, then there has to be an additional charge to the performer or production company. One company found out with a hefty fine and was sued by the victim of an accident, so they turned to an outside carrier.North Pole Nightmare and wis bang Thank this. -
Always have another licensed driver in the crew?

There’s no way you can be legal with your current business model.
